Had to install a vacuum pump, for my brakes, because of the lack of vacuum on my 383 and have added sound deadening behind the back seat, but still it's loud. I thought of mounting it in a ice chest, in the trunk, but the manufacturer says this will kill the pump, because of the heat. What can I do to quiet this thing down?
I'm running with the same issue in my '36 coupe with a too big a cam in the SBC under it's hood. It's in an insulated enclosure inside the trunk. Sounds like an annoying muffled jackhammer. I just live with it................stupid though, I know. The good thing though, my vacuum went from 7.5 inches to 16 inches.
Sounds like it is one of the old "China brand" pumps that SSBC sells. When I worked there as QC , I think about 60% of them came back for this reason. There are some more expensive ones out there that are quieter and I think some older chevy vans had some quiet ones from the factory. Of course there is always hydroboost ( also on some vans) and I remember a street rod hydroboost, maybe ECI or Masterpower? Maybe try a smaller diameter, double plunger booster. Whatever you do use, make sure you have a good check valve to keep it from bleeding down.
Switch to hydraboost, if you get the ones off 1ton trucks (chevy 73-87) they don't have that dorky looking plastic resevoir and aluminum housing. That's assuming you have power steering.
