    hey guys

been a while since ive been on but i have a 56 olds super 88 hardtop that i have attempted to put a brand new msd 6al, coil and leads into today.

i am triggering the msd from the existing points dizzy. the dizzy has a new set of points with cap rotor and leads.

The problem that im having is that when i ground the white wire i get a nice big fat spark through the coil lead. But triggered through the points i get nothing.

I have a theory that i dont have a good enough earth through the dizzy as its a greasy old rocket.

    any help would be great.

Might check that the points are clean, and that the breaker plate ground wire is intact. Use an ohm meter to check resistance from the points wire to ground, both with the points open, and with them closed (turn the engine a bit to open and close them). You might also try removing the condenser.

To test the points and the ground on the distributor; put a test light from ground, to the negative small terminal on the coil. The light should blink on and off as the engine turns over.

The light will be out when the points are closed, and on when the points are open.

So, if the light stays on, you either have a speck of dirt on the points, or a bad wire to the points from coil, or a bad ground at dist. To test a bad ground at dist, put test light from positive side of coil to the plate that the points are attached to. The light should be on all the time if the key is on.

If the light stays off, the wire could be shorted to ground, or condenser is shorted.
