From the few things I can find it seems the front wheel bearings I need for my superbell dropped axle are the same as the early ford ones. If I have this correct does it mean the bearings for a 41' ford deluxe would be the same ones I need? My local part store has them in stock for a 41' Ford deluxe, Fedral/ National bearings with the races. The funny part is that if I use the Timken numbers I think I need they are special order but the National/ Fedral mogue units are in stock. The fedral part numbers I have are not listed under the 41' Ford deluxe.
If you are using 28-48 Ford spindles the bearings/seals also interchange over those years. And of course Ford hubs of the same time frame need to be used. Disk brake conversion kits etc will need other bearings.
If it helps, you can go on www.napaautoparts.com and when you choose a bearing, it will give you the dimensions of the bearings, to compare.
OK - Anyone have part numbers for a superbell dropped front axle with basic disc brake conversion (the one that uses intermediate GM calipers)?
Still looking for part numbers! I can get Federal for a 41' Deluxe for less than $10 bearing and race outers, inners a little more. I have a great hook-up on these bearings and they look the same just trying to double check my measurements!!
Call or email Jason Slover at Pete & Jakes/Super Bell. http://www.peteandjakes.com/Contact.aspx If you are using the basic disc brake set your bearings will be specific to the hub/disc that you are using. The GM discs require a specific set of inter bearings and races. The MOPAR discs use a different set. The basic kits come with bearing adapters that have to be pressed on the spindle. Unless I am mistaken, the basic kit comes with the brackets, bearing adapters, bearings, seals and some hardware. The deluxe kit comes with everything. It sounds to me like all you have are the brackets. I used the basic kit on my roadster and sourced the other parts locally. Ended up spending as much as I would have for the complete kit. At one time P&J offered free shipping for HAMB Alliance members. Ask about it if you make an order.
Thanks Bib! I don't need anything but replacement bearings. The car is built and running down the road. I was checking the front end and didn't like how one of the outer bearings felt so I want to replace it. I do not want to use their replacement bearings because they look like cheap overseas stuff, I want to run Timken or another reliable bearing maker. The rollers on the outer bearings from their install kit have voids/pits in them like the quality of metal was poor.
What does the axle or the brakes have to do with the bearings? It's all about the spindles and hubs. What are THEY?
The spindles came with the superbell complete axle set-up. From what I read they are 28-48 ford spindles and of course the hub is part of the brakes (disc brake rotor is the hub last I looked!) The hubs or brake rotor are the ones that come from superbell for their basic disk brake kit, if I knew what superbell uses for their kit the problem would be solved. I know the use 78- later intermediate GM calipers but I believe their adapters use the stock Ford bearings just trying to confirm.
These bearings are not marked at all which leaves me to believe they were cheap import garbage. I am use to the markings (use to rebuild travel trailers/ motorhomes for a living) and this is the first time I found bearings that were not identified. After much research this is what I found. I would suggest anyone that has a superbell front axle with the GM disc brake set up to write it down because it wasn't easy to come by! 28-48 spindles with adapters 71' and later Camaro rotors 78' and later Gm intermediate calipers Now the good stuff: Inner bearing - LM67048 Cone length - 0.660" Inside diameter - 1.250" radius - .0900" Outer bearing - LM11949 Cone length - 0.655" Inside diameter - 0.750" radius - 0.046" Seal - #6985 Shaft size - 1.875" Housing Bore - 2.628" Seal Width - 0.347" Seal outside dia. - 2.633" I wish I had the bearing race part numbers also but it should be easy to get now that I have the bearing numbers. Rock Auto has them for 1/2 price of NAPA but the NAPA premium stuff is SKF which I consider to be top notch.
LM67048 and 11949 are VERY common bearings, used in lots of applications. It should be very easy to match those up. A bearing place might have the good stuff cheaper still, worth a call. Mart.
