It all depends on how crazy you get with it, like anything else. My general builds run me around $75 to complete, all-out contest cars, I've had $150 into them. I think anyone can build one up out of the box with decent paint for under $35-40. Bob
There's a forum for Traditional Rod and "Kustoms" in Scale, register to log in. Lots of great builders there... http://trakinscale.proboards.com Revell has a whole line of nice '32 Ford kits, includng a roadster, 3-window and 5-window coupes, and Tudor sedan, along with a bunch of other cars that lend themselves to building traditional r&c. They're soon releasing a chopped late '40s Ford coupe with a lot of late '40s and early '50s custom parts. Of course you can't go wrong with the old standbys from AMT, including their '40 coupe, originally released in 1960...
If you are on Facebook, look up Model Car Swap Meet. I know one guy that sold off around 5,000 kits (that number is according to him) and he still has tons of parts! A lot of older kits change hands over there.
There is a Ben Franklin store in Winterset, IA that has a pretty good selection of models. I thought Ben Franklin was a nation-wide chain so look for one. I bought some models at a discount when the Ben Franklin in Stuart sold out.
Not to change the subject, but they have a model of Elvira's car in there... I just seen her Saturday night on the tube... Man, what a rack!!!
I found the site I was looking for http://www.thedpmcc.com/instructionsintro.html Thanks for the other great sites !!!
