Pinstriping question

Hi Im in the process of deciding on doing flames or scallops on my shoebox cause I can't stand the yellow the previous owner painted it its just easier to keep some of the yellow cause all the inside is all yellow for now quick easy paint job later a full on tear down and custom work. Ok the question after all that is on pinstriping do you reduce the same as if you were going to shoot it or is the paint thicker than that and is it best to strip then clear over all instead of ontop thanks for any info.

 

Traditional pinstriping is typically put on top of the clearcoat after the fact. The paint is not premixed or reduced either, the pinstriper pallets his paint into the brush to get the feel for the flow, too think will cause opaque lines, too thick will not drag properly,therfore there is really no proper mix theory due to factors such as heat, humidity etc... Unlike spraying where you watch for the paint to lay properly you must be able to feel the brush drag properly in order to get a good line. Hope this doesn't confuse you????

 

nope just a new thing I need to learn Im sure this first time wont be the best but Im willing to take a chance and learn by doing. Thanks for your input.

 

Practice on something else first.

 

dont try to clear over one shot or it'll be a disaster. i believe the house of color stuff u can clear over.

 

Can clear over 1shot if you add hardner to it, HOK striping paint is clear coat safe out of the can.
Practice on something or better yet, hire a local striper to do your work, its not as easy as it looks to pull long straight lines, or any lines at that.

 

The last stripe job done in our shop we buried the one shot in three heavy coats of clear. The clear split and cracked the stripe in several places which fit the ride just right.

 

so is it not possible to use auto paint reduce it and still put it on with brush then clear it I could use a marker I think sharpie makes colors now haha joking thanks for the info so far need some more options

 

If you try to reduce 1shot and pinstripe with it, it'll run all over the place, it's best to dip your mack in some mineral spirits, then let the brush partially dry, dip it in the one shot and load it up by brushing it back and forth on a mag or phone book or something. That'll equalize the mineral spirits left in the hair of the brush with the 1shot!

 

Practice on a piece of gl*** or mirror - it's hard to do but the best way to learn - plus easy clean up by s****ing it off with a razor blade.
