The centre is from Ebay, but I added screws on it for a more racy look.

I always like to read the posts from the hambers in the Scandinavian countries because you guys must have a special gene in your DNA for making things from scratch. We buy stuff over here, you fellas just make your own. Great job, man. I may do that myself since I can't decide on a wheel for my project.
What kind of hub are you using?

I'm flattered. Since that's exactly what I tried to do: Make a scaled down version of a typical, non dished, british vintage sports car wheel.

Even if I'm very deep into hot rodding, I must admit that I love the interior design on vintage british sports cars.

The hub is Ebay stuff inteded for GM columns.

The wood is birch plywood. 1/2" at the back (beacause of the finger grips) and 3/8" on the front. Plywood with extra few layers. Only 5 on the 3/8" and 7 on the 1/2".

The rims are 3/16" aluminum. Same as on the cl***ic British Moto-Lita steering wheels.

Cutting out the aluminum was the biggest job. Mostly because of my lack of high quality tools. I did most of it with a hole saw and a grinder with flap disc.

Cutting and sanding the wood was easier.

I'm not sure how many hours of effective work, but it really wasn't that much. Maybe 10 hours?
I did lot of homework on the design, tow. Made up an exact working sheet, asked several kit car Cobra owners about their steering wheels dimensions etc etc.

  27. That is just about what I was telling my wife as I was looking at the steering wheel! It is embar***ing to me when people say things like "yankee ingenuity" when there are talented people all over this globe. The scandinavian rodders that post here seem to be a resourceful and talented bunch.
    Very good job!!

  28. Very cool! I was just looking at this one last night thinking how elegant it was yet it looked like something I could make in the shop. ('64 XKE)
