I went to an autocross event last weekend in my 32 roadster. I had a blast! Was not the fastest car by any means, but I think I got the most smiles from everyone there. I was curious how the sporty types would react to having a hot rod in with their Porsches and BMWs but they were all very nice and even a few new about Doene Spencer road racing his roadster back in the day. My times were mid range with everyone else but My car was loud and power sliding the whole way. It was a handful, but a ton of fun! Now for some sticky tires and some better front shocks and .......
This really makes me happy, I used to autocross quite a bit with my past cars, I would love to autocross a hot rod, How is your body roll? you could probably rig up some semi hidden/possibly removable sway bars to your hair pins if you needed to
I intend to hit the Autocross deal at Good Guy's Scottsdale next spring with the Plymouth... Can't wait! Good to see you out there mixing it up.
Good on ya !! Autocross has got to be just about the most fun you can have with a car at <50mph.... One word for next time-Video....think on it!!
The body roll was not as bad as I thought it would be, the front shocks have about 2" of down travel and they were not bottoming out. I have Pete and Jake's shocks on the front and I think it would be better with something a little more dampening. Anti roll bars would really help. I usually run 26# of air on the street but pumped it to 38# and it made a big difference. The car was surprisingly neutral after that. I have some good videos, I just need to upload them when I get back to work on Monday. If you look at the last picture you can see the go pro camera mounted to the door. I was working the wheel so much the announcer called me "the hardest working man in autocross".
Used to love to autocross, now my son does and I go watch. He wants me to autocross his Miata, But my fibromyalga doesn't think that's a good idea!
My friend did the one at the GG show in Des Moines with his 32 5 window. His background is sporty cars built to handle, so when he built his 32, he set up with BEEFY home built sway bars front and rear. For a big/little tired hot rod, it handles well!. I told him when he was building it that he better set it up to turn, or he'd end up with it on it's roof because he was so used to cars that handle well. He's currently working on a killer 67 Camaro that is set up in the pro touring style, and he can't wait to get that one on a course. He had a Triumph spitfire that was set up with a Mazda Rotary that he let me try on a track once, but I was like a gorilla riding a gokart. I felt like I sat ON it rather than IN it!!
I Auto-crossed my Roadster and I drifted off the course and did several doughnuts to get my bearings... ****y e.t.... but fun!
