look for a stamped number, like 6G or similar.

47-50 champion is what it likely is

If they are V8s, the number you need is stamped on top just to the drivers side of the oil fill tube on the gasket surface of the valley pan. Right under the copper oil line. The codes are on the SDC forum. It will tell you what year and what size the motor is. This is a 58 259.

Are these numbers cast or stamped? cast numbers are raised, stamped are indented

    1R-149,001 1954 3R Series Commercial 170"

I think the numbers on that web page are showing the first serial number used for each year, if you look further down it shows

    441,001 1949 Champion (8G) 170"
    521,001 1950 Champion (9G) 170"

My guess is that you have an engine from a pickup (commercial) since it is a 1R number. and I guess it's from around 1949-1950, but the listing for each year for the commercial engines is incomplete. Since they made about 149,000 engines between 49 and 53, yours are probably from 1950, interpolating when they would have made engines with serial numbers around 40,000. Also, that other web page I found showed the casting number you give as being used for 1947-1950.

85? Nah, we got 234 out of ours:

Of course that might have had something to do with the turbocharger...

You kinda have to make it... Buick Turbo Regal intake, and custom plenum from Digger Dave Molnar. The engine currently resides in another HAMBer's 3-wheeler called "The Tribaker."
