How much harder/different is it than using an F1-F3? What about steering column mods, etc?

Isn't the actual box quite a bit bigger? F1 boxes are tiny!

yeah, I believe it is indeed bigger, but how much I don't know.

Seems like it's been hard to find a good F1 box lately at a good price....

Paid $120 for a good no-play 53-56 F100 box with the arm, draglink, and a 50's aftermarket 3 bolt steering wheel adaptor at the last Turlock swapmeet.

    They're out there! :)

Oh, I also have a 53-56 F250 F300 F400 steering column, that box is HUGE!!

Good to know about the size...I read someone saying that "it's the same as the F1". I thought it looked different, somehow..but without one side by side, I wasn't sure.

Too bad you can't find those prices on E*ay, *list, or even on here. Sometimes I think ppl charge more on here than they do elsewhere, I find that strange.

I reckon if I'm not running pipes down there, but rather out the side, it doesn't really matter, then, does it?

EXCEPT.....for the steering column length XP

Don't forget about the starter. The starter and the steering box often try to occupy the same spot...

Not on my SBC....starter is on the passenger side.

  12. Funny. Aren't you the guy with the $20 T hood that you want $250 for? Or am I mistaken?

I picked up an F-1 column, box, pitman arm, and wheel 2 weeks ago at the swap meet for $80. They are out there.

Yeah, wait for a F-1 or F-100, they're out there. I saw one of each at a local spring swap for $50 each.

Yeah, I'm "that" guy...don't know if you bothered to read the ad, but I wanted to trade it towards an A hood...since I made it public I got it for 20 bucks, I'm SURE people on here are gonna offer me more than 40 for it

Thanks for the info on my question, though.

    Oh...here's the text:

"Great quality Model T hood, couple very minor dings, no pitting or rusting. Hood hinges work great. I'm actually looking more to trade it for a 28/29 or 30/31 hood in similar condition....read: I WANT TO TRADE FOR A MODEL A HOOD...but, if you want to buy it, fine by me "

  15. No, I read the ad. I was just letting you answer the question you asked. It all
boils down to supply and demand. If I remember correctly, I paid $150 or better for the F-1 column I'm using on my truck. I wish I would have found the cheaper one first, but that's the way it goes.

Oh, and I'm not busting your balls, I'm just a sarcastic prick, ha!

No worries, I'm on edge, hopped up on Pepsi Throwback....and since I work from my home studio, I'm also being Mr. Mom since my wife went back to work from maternity leave.....rough times till we find an in-house sitter XP

Yeah, $150 plus is a good price for a nicey-nice quality one I think....especially if it comes with a Pitman arm and fo sho' if it also comes with the drag link. I tend to look at post count and if their Alliance members when buying, too. Never been disappointed by one...yet ;)

  17. Oh, and wait 'till you go to buy F-1 shock mounts. It's like they are made of gold!:D
I'm always the guy that buys from the guy that got the good deal! Haha!

I have several F series trucks 53-55 of various sizes so this thread got me curious. The F-100 and F-250 trucks I have seem to have the same size steering boxes. I also have an F-350, an F-600 and a B-600 (bus), these boxes appear be physically bigger than the F-100 and F-250.

Another thing to think about on the big truck boxes is that they are going to be geared lower. More turns lock to lock.

yo if I can chime in here... steering box is something that I wouldn't be afraid to drop some cash on. You want it to be tight and safe. You also don't want too many turns lock to lock. I actually came across this thread because I am seriously considering getting rid of my big late 60's Saginaw box. I only paid 50 bucks for it but it's too many turns lock to lock. Kinda retarded when you are trying to park in a tight spot. I guess what I'm saying is, there will plenty of other not so important parts of the car that you'll be able to save money on...

  27. it does matter, the block still hits. dennis carpenter has used boxes. f100 will be very hard to fit. the f1 is much better but still needs to have the sector shaft side of the box shortend to clear the engine.

  28. Man, there was a 53 or 54 Ford F100 flatbed in the you-pull-it yard here last year. I could have got the steering box, probably would have had to pay for the column too, but for like $30 or so total.

Pretty sure I have a pitman arm and maybe a drag link for the big truck if interested.

The f1- f3 trucks use the same box. f4-f6 are the same box but bigger than f1. Overall shape is the same between the two boxes just the big truck box is bigger. Wider spacing between the bolt holes but same triangle pattern. The sector is an 1/8th inch larger but they all take the same nut 7/8-14 for the pitman.

I put an f4-f6 box in my f1 as I had hoped for easier effort on the steering. Jury is out on this as I am not sure it made much difference.
