Hack, What can I say? After throwing so much **** your way about this project I'm humbled by your accomplisment. I , for one, didn't give it a snowballs chance in hell of ever seeing the road. But you've hung in there and put us naysayers on the trailer. I hope you have it at the breakfast whenever it comes about and Billetproof is a must.

I fully intend to give you some **** concerning the car but at least you'll have the satisfaction of me partaking of a huge slice of humble pie beforehand. Just to let you know I haven't lost my touch I fully intend to be all over you about your next project. Now I realize you've already announced what it will be but my spies tell me your knee deep in gathering parts to put a Cox .049 model airplane engine in a Peterbuilt. :D I think I've got a line on another 2.8 if the Cox thing doesn't work out.

    Way to go brother.

  19. Thank god it's a Peterbuilt, it'd NEVER fit in a Freightliner!

Great job! It's nice to see you get it on the road. We watched you agonize over selling it last year(?), despair over the failed Plan Vega, and now you're driving it. Looks good! And the 2.8 really seems to fit in there well! How is she for power?

    Congrats,
    Karl

  22. Very cool man, its always awesome to see someone get it on the road. Even better when you can do it _your_ way. Congrats

Yeah, how is she for power? It's cool to see that you are finally driving it.

  26. Hey Hack..., is that the drivetrain you were hauling around in the back of a Honda...???

Still have the photo's of you working under that same overloaded Honda up on the curb....???:D

That looks like a totally FUN car...!!!

    Congrats on the build!!!

You have proven yourself to be a guy who doesn't quit. THATS even cooler than the car!

BTW...How did you lose the weight? I think I've put ON 20 lbs since last year!!! DAMN...I gotta lay off the sugar...sigh.

Just got back from my longest drive yet...tooled all the way over to Six-Gunner's house so he could see his old Gal after her makeover. Took him around the block as promised, and even raided his garage to grab a set of tail lights for Tanya's T before I left!

The old 49 runs and drives SO sweet! Just rumbles along smooth and steady! The motor runs cool and without a hitch...fires right up with just a bump of the key and cruises right along!

You can't even feel the transmission shift, you just barely catch the rpm changes in the exhaust note. There's a few odd vibrations and funky harmonics at random speeds, but nothing terrible...I attribute it to the driveline angle, but it's so minimal that it isn't really worth worrying about.

The only two things that need immediate attention are the alternator/water pump belt and the rear tires...the belt makes slight contact with the bolt for my custom made alternator bracket, but it doesn't seem to be chewing up too quick. A little grinding on the bolt and it'll be Disco!

It's still riding on the ancient bias ply tubeless tires and 55 Olds wheels out back that we dug outta the mud at the boneyard the other day. They hold air fine, and look okay upon visual inspection...but the car takes and odd wiggle now and then as they go over cracks. Been a while since I drove anything on old bias ply tires, so it was only a surprise the first time.

As for POWER, I really don't know! I built this car as a cruiser, and reliability was my primary concern, follwed by fuel efficiency since it only runs a six gallon marine tank! The engine doesn't have a hint of blow-by, runs silky smooth, and rumbles right along through it's deep tone pipes! It's responsive and really barks when you step on it, but I haven't laid into it through the gears to "see what she'll do" yet.

(I'll give y'all a Performance Report on these mills when the next car is done...THAT one will be the hot rod with an Edelbrock intake, hotter cam, headers, four barrel and a four speed in a miniscule, stripped down modified style bucket!)

2.8s are my personal "go to" engine...other guys default to small block Chevy V8s when they're seeking a reliable, compact, easy to work on powerplant for the cars they build...I just turn to the little 173 engines for the same reasons SQUARED! Real tiny, very reliable, easy to wrench on, dirt cheap and good running little cusses to boot!

The 49 Chevy here just reaffirms my belief in these little motors! The car is at LEAST as quick as any Stovebolt powered 49, and it'll run for years! That's what I was looking for in this endeavor!

(Yeah, Wingnutz...the motor in the 49 is the same one we hauled back to Michigan from Missouri in DirtyT's old Honda last Summer!!! Kenny was an AWESOME host and we had a blast!!)

    Man...thats incredible...
Bet you saved a bunch of money too huh?!?!

I'm gonna give it a shot! I drink WAY too much soft drink, sweet tea and coffee anyway. I'm gonna go unsweetened tea and bottled water...I only eat takeout once a week so that might not make a huge difference.
    We'll see how it goes...

    The HAMB diet! LoL
