50 Chevy, 53 Hudson

Discussion in 'New to the H.A.M.B.? Introduce yourself here!' started by Moredoor, May 12, 2005.

  1. Been lurkin’ for a while, Figured it was time to join up and announce my presence. After 30 years (First car at 13) and 50 some odd cars I thought the disease was in remission, but thanks to this board I find myself fighting the need to go up to that auction in northern MO and bring back a few of those 600 cars!

Anyway, have a 50 Chevy 3100 pickup that I’ve owned and driven for 20 years now. San Diego truck most of its life. Was a “fake” 4x4 when I got it. Lift blocks above the axles, big off road tires and a 500lb steel and wood flatbed on the back. Called it finished in ’91 after it was painted. (But they are never really done) Over the years its been my only vehicle at times, been used to haul trash to the dump, had a camper in the back for a while, used on a bunch of 2000+ mile road trips across the country. (Last one 2 years ago) Now just used for fun. Runs an old Buick 300 V8, TH350, Nova rear, AMC Pacer front suspension.

Other car has yet to be a driver. (Soon?) Mostly stock ’53 Hudson Hornet four-door sedan. Unrusted from the Nevada desert. Was a “Twin H Power” car with a Hydro, but I’m afraid that’s been gone long before I got it. Now just a boring ‘ol SBC/TH350. (yawn)

PS: Ya, I know the trucks purple. I get “comments” on the color choice, but I like it so who cares.

    Welcome,

The hudson is very cool... Too bad the twin-H is history, but they are not too hard to find. Maybe one day?

  6. Cool, another Hudson owner! Is it a long-term project? Year? Pix? Not sure if the “?!?” in your post means you didn’t get my shorthand.(SBC=Small Block Chevy) Here is an under hood shot. Ignore the dust, that’s why it was outside, to clean it up some and get working on plumbing and wiring.

  7. Thanks! Only time the old ‘50 needed a part on a long road trip was in Okalahoma City. Alternator stopped charging as I was p***ing through on my way to San Diego. 8pm on the day before Thanksgiving. I hit a payphone and got a guy closing up an Auto Zone. Gave me directions and held the store open half hour after closing for me. Good people in Okalahoma.

Nice Hudson. What are your plans for it?

  9. No hard-set plans, I’m open to ideas. Any suggestions?

After I get it running/driving this summer I'll go from there. I guess a lot depends on how well it goes down the road. The front-end and steering feels tight with no play; real world results may be different. My '50 was a bear to drive with the stock front-end.

I will drop the back 2” to match the front cut coils. I think bags would be cool, but may be a little beyond the immediate budget. Going to keep the paint, it’s a base/clear that color sands and buffs up real nice. (Tried it on one of the back fenders) I also would like to ditch the chrome smoothies for some stock wheels, skinny whitewalls and full hubcaps like my Dad had on his '53 Olds 88 when I was a kid. I don’t remember what we pulled ‘um off, just that we got them on one of our many junkyard parts runs. (In about 1971) Dad seems to think they may have been from a 98 of about the same year as his 88.

  12. Not at all. The bustling metropolis of Springfield. You? Hey, since you spoke up about MO, Would you or anybody else lurking know of any good junkyards within Saturday morning driving distance of Springfield? One that has not crushed all the older cars? Still need a few bits and pieces for the 'ol Hud.

  13. Welcome aboard! I've got a 50 Hudson Super 8 coupe so good to see another Hudsonite on here. My mother lives in Springfield and I get back there every once and awhile we'll have to go hit Steak & Shake some time! Welcome to the HAMB
