I have a 56 Vicky with an FE in it. I know it was hot rodded back in the day, and that the motor was professionally built.

My questions is about the tag I found Glued to the block, on the p*** side near the the casting #'s.

Can anyone shed some light on what the numbers/letters on the tag mean?

Best I can think of is that they are from the engine builder, but I don't know if there is some system they use or what?

This is the tag in question

This is where it was, you can make out the outline. Front p*** side of the block

    Thanks

    It's a rebuilder's tag, hence the 010, 010, and 030.

That's what I was thinking, but haven't seen a tag like this before.(green)

Do you think that J4944 is Job # 4944, and that A85 could mean Jan of 1985?

Could be. Does it matter? Every shop has/had their own system. You could interpret the other stuff until the end of time and still not get it right. Don't sweat it.

Not sweating it, Just trying to satisfy curiousity until I have a good reason to open the motor up and measure.

if you cleaned it by means other than a wire wheel, you might see some writing on it.

  9. Yup, all the ones I have seen had the rebuilders info silk screen on the top.

No, it had two layer of paint on it. I highly doubt I would have seen anything.

Being green it may have come from Jasper Engines in Jasper In.

  12. No, I can see remnants of letters above the 49. In this instance an old crockpot and soap might have lifted the layers so you could read it.

It's ok, If I ever really wanted to know exactly who built it, I could find out. I just don't want to speak to the man who knows.

    I'll live.
