Picked up this heap from my brother in law this weekend. 1949 3100 mostly complete... kind of... $200 so I couldn't complain. I'll see what I can do with it and how fast I can get it done. Came with new floor pans and cab corners so at least I don't have to order those!

Looks like a 235 inline and a granny 4 speed. Haven't ID'd anything yet. Supposedly stock torque tube rear, stock springs etc.

Plans are low slung stock suspension, reliable runner out of the existing 235 and 4 speed, satin paint with flames. I was looking at just plain green, but my 5 and 6 year old girls are insisting on red with flames so I'm thinking vintage burgundy pearl flatz and some gold flake flames. I'm on a limited budget so no IFS, big block, and tubbed out stuff here... I also prefer the old stuff or traditional rods, so no s10 frame swap either, NO BAGS and no big ass billet rims... that stuff's all fine and dandy for other folks but you won't find it in my driveway...

So... on to the plan, get the cab rot all cut out and patched up, strip the frame bare and paint it, put it back together with new parts where needed, get this bitch on the road as fast as possible. I'm also building a yamaha chop, and getting a house ready for sale, AND have baby boy on the way due in late August.. so this should be really fun to watch me go nuts and pull some hair out...

So here's how it sits as of last Sunday...

  2. I am looking forward to seeing this puzzle coming together. Nice find.

  3. Judging by the last photo, it looks like your door, hood and fenders need better alignment . Really, love these old Chevy trucks and yours is gonna be good from the looks of your parts pile and damn..the price was right :D

Thanks for the heads up Gary.

I'm not really sure what direction I'm heading with this truck as of right now, so I'm just going to try to get it running with what I have and road worthy first. Along the way if something is junk, I'll replace with as cheap of an upgrade as I can and see what happens. I like the 235 and four speed combo I have and my frame's in decent shape so I'll stick with that for now.

I'd like to do some mild stuff while it's torn down and being put back together, like peak the fenders and hood or something. If I come across a nice small block for dirt cheap I may think about it, but if I get this 235 going, I'll more than likely stay with it.

Either way, I'm not trying to make a high dollar show truck out of this thing. I want something cool that I can haul my parts and junk around in, just a super low budget toy until I can finish off some of the other projects I've got going at the moment.

  6. ...looks like a dandy project, can't believe these things keep popping up. Good luck with it.

  7. You stole it! And from your brother...shame on you!

haha, looking forward to your progress!

Yeah, I still need to adjust a few things, but the ductape and bungee cords should hold it for awhile!

Got my hands a little dirty, found some blue under all that engine crud. So I ran the engine numbers on all sorts of sites, got all sorts of confused, with some help from the guys over at the stovebolt forum they determined it's a 1959 235, now to pick up a few parts and get this beast breathing...

I got another!!!! Well, I haven't paid for it yet, my friend "Leaky Paul" is kind of financing me one of his "extras". We're going to get it going and then I'll sell the 49, the new truck is COMPLETE 1950 original forest green paint, original rims and hubcaps, nice seat, OG heater. The cab has already been patched, the cross supports in the bed are shot, fenders are dented up, orignal 216 inline 6 and 3 on the tree (I'm thinking about swapping in my 4 in the floor from the 49). I'm going to use some parts off the red 49 to finish up the green 50 and sell whats left of the 49 as a complete project truck for someone else to play with. ;)

Another nice find! Just a suggestion here - I'd use the later 235 from your '49 and mate it to the 3-speed/column shift. That way you've got the better engine and later on you can add a Borg Warner OD unit easily and have a nice cruiser. That stump puller 4-speed is great if you're going to be hauling firewood but kinda an overkill for a cruiser.

Good luck whatever you do and keep the pictures coming.

I've been tossing around the same idea on the 235, wasn't really familiar with the 4 speeds so thanks for the input. I may drive the 216 for now and maybe swap in the 235 later. eventually a small block would be nice, but who knows what'll end up happening down the road.

ok, it's got the original 216 and 6v system. we tried to fire her up just for a second the other night and it was a no go. using a 12v battery for juice and an old harley coffin tank for gas, we got it pumping gas, cranking over. BUT no fire to the plugs. Hooked up a 12v coil, switched the 6v condenser out for a 12v unit and still no fire to the plugs. cleaned the cap out a bit, still notta. points are moving like they should, I would think it really odd for ALL six wires to be bad. Anyone want to chime in with an opinion before I head down the next go round?

Figured out what I was doing wrong. I was reading the new 12v coil that said "use WITH external resistor" and was thinking "use WITHOUT external resistor" sooo.. Slapped on a 12v coil that was internally resisted, new cap, rotor, points, condensor, plugs, and wires and away she went. Sounds like a good clean running mill to me. Gonna run the 216 for a good long while until I get an early v8 to build. We also mocked up some of the front clip and stood around an shot the breeze for a long time. Good times.

well, finally got to bring the 50 home today... just in time for the snow  it literally started snowing as we pulled in front of the house. Screwy end to a screwy week. Now I get to stare at it sitting in my driveway from the kitchen window all damn weekend like a kid at Christmas that just got a new toy but can't go outside and play with it... ;}~
