I am trying to identify the original application of this Stewart Warner 6,000 RPM tachometer. The back is stamped "596 AR" (or AP) " "C9" "48" & "21" I believe that C9 makes this a Sept. 1935 dated tachometer.

Gauge face reads "R.P.M. IN HUNDREDS" & "STEWART WARNER MADE IN USA" inside the lower rim.

The tach is rear mounting type, has curved glass face, mechanical drive and is ~3.5" in diameter.

Does anyone have a SW manual that shows these part numbers?

    Thanks,
    Andy

The "AP/AR" label is fairly important. I looked through my Stewart Warner passenger car lists 1928-41 and did not see those part numbers. In the parts books both numbers exist, but Stewart Warner does not have much for cross referencing vehicle model from gauge part number. I can tell you the face, gear, lens retainer, etc, etc. part numbers but not what car it came from. I would lean towards boat. Its definitely not heavy truck.

Thanks for the information. What does your book say about AP & AR codes. I will dig out a magnifying glass to see if I can figure out which one it really is.
    Thanks,

It is just a listing of vehicles and their associated gauges. The number designation is the movement model and the letter code is the cosmetic. No pictures in what I have since we're speedometer technicians and are looking up which gear/shaft/etc to replace.

This did not come off of a flathead motor. It had a crank driven mount for a small block chevy engine. Guy said it was on a early dragster in the late 50s.
Tach is definitely earlier than the rest of the stuff though...probably from the 1930s?

  8. Might it have been an industrial unit originally? Doesn't seem to have any illumination provision.
