Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by JAKE'S-Pumpkinella54, Sep 4, 2011.

  1. OK . took old intake off of 350 chevy motor. Getting a new intake one . im s****ing off the old gasket and i noticed someone had put super thin pieces of metal under gasket against head to block a p***age ( the 4th hole back) . this was done on both heads. Under the hole is just oil..

Intake: was stock from what i can tell ( no name brand )
    heads : say manley

did they use the wrong gaskets ... and use metal .

please help ... or ill be tossing and turning . thanks jake

i was skimming a chevy big block forum and someone was describing the opposite of this situation. he had a block that didn't have holes where the manifold did. another guy said he had the same thing on his 454.
    weird.

Those little steel pieces block the heat going under the carb...makes choke close quicker if the heat gets in there.....some people put them on, some dont.....nothing to worry about

  4. thanks beast ..

They're used to block the heat p***age that goes across the intake. If you're going to drive somewhere where it's cold, it's a good idea to leave the p***ages open. Actually for anything but a race car, it's a good idea to leave them open.

  6. the holes have oil in them .. so when I put the new intake and gasket should cover those holes.... right ?

Hmmm....there shouldn't be oil there, unless it just seeped in over time, which does happen some times when they're blocked.

The holes in the head go to the exhaust port, the holes in the intake go across the intake from one side to the other. On a stock engine, there is a heat riser valve, or an "early fuel evaporation" valve at the exhaust manifold outlet on one side, which restricts the exhaust flow on one side of the engine, forcing the exhaust go to thru that p***age. When the engine warms up, the heat riser valve opens completely (it has a thermostatic spring), so there is little or no exhaust flow thru the intake. At least that's how it's designed to work.

the intake manifold has an exhaust crossover under the carb. base.To heat the carb. The thin metal caused a restriction to keep the heat in the crossover p***age

  9. its cold here . so ... the new intake should have holes to mate up with theses hole...

sorry i know these questions are dumb .. thanks for help in advance .

  10. so say the engine rolled on its side ...for a period of time... could that be why these holes have oil in them ...? im so confused

  11. ok i get what chuck said... but the holes should just have air not oil?

Intake gaskets usually leak a little, it's pretty common to find oil (or the heavy part of gasoline) in strange places in an engine. If you could take some pictures we could be more sure about what's going on. I really doubt there is any kind of problem with it, just put it back together with gaskets that have the holes in them, and don't worry about it too much.

  13. thanks ... if i flip the intake the was originaly on there it has pan that has a hole in it ...almost as if oil needs to go in there to drip down onto the lifter valley .. im gonna take pics and try to post them to thread if not ill put them in my album under chevy 50 . thanks guys
