Ive got a 62 merc monterey. I recently just had my carb rebuit. Prior to this is I gave the car just a slight amount of pressure on the gas peddle it would rev a bit and stall. I changed the plugs, wire, distributor cap and electronic ignition. The last week or so I smell gas when driving not all the time comes and goes and now im fumbling and stalling from time to time. I know the float is bad not sure if a sending unit could be the cause or the carb and the mechanic need to be sorted out. Fuel pump? and ideas on where to start looking.

Sounds like you're running too rich. Lean it out some, but tune it with a stoichometer to be sure.

    Some things to check for:
Fuel tank venting. Check your dwell, etc.... get it set right.
You said "electronic ignition". Been updated? Make sure coil voltage is correct.
Which float is bad? Tank sender or carb float?

Plugs are brand new. Back fires when I let off the gas but I just straight piped it not sure if that matters but that just started as I got rid of the muffler. Choke? Can an electric get stuck?

Is it light-off or excess fuel in the exhaust, or backfire, which comes out the carburetor?

Electric chokes can indeed get stuck.

If you are experiencing true backfire out of the carburetor, you may have a blown power valve, depending on what carburetor you have.
