Exhaust leak that small won't have much if any effect. The raising of the hood tells much more, you need to ventilate the engine compartment . Holes/louvers in the inner fenders would be a good place to start.

john, i was thinking about louvering the hood but i think i'll star on the inner fenders instead. i can ventilate the inner fenders myself and not have to be miserable if the job isn't perfect.
anybody got any pictures where they have don this?

I don't have any pics of home done lovers or vents, but you could put a slot or two in each inner fender between the radiator and the engine.

If it were mine I would drill a 1/2" hole on either end of where you want the slot, then use a saber saw or low clearance hack saw to connect the holes.

Or you could just bore some holes there with a hole saw.

Not pretty, but it should help.

    Best of luck to you.

well, when the flash floods and tornados finish up maybe i can go for a ride. as soon as i changed the thermostat yesterday the cable from the solenoid to the starter ****ped out. it was loose at the terminal on the solenoid (no lock washer). new cable and lock washer and it fires up as good as my '11 dodge. also got under the thing for the first time where somebody wasn't telling me i couldn't be in their shop while it was on the rack. the starter looks pretty new and has a small heat shield. i'm hoping i solved a couple of problems this weekend.
it's amazing how much more fun it is to work on something you aren't depending on. i used to get really worked up when i worked on cars but now i can just leave the projects on the stands.
i'm really glad i got back into this. also glad i found this board, it's by far the best one i've eve belonged to.
thanks for all the input guys.
