I bought a set of magnesium front runners. someone painted them the color of patina...anyway i want to fix this problem what is my best solution to do this without ruining the potential patina under the painted surface? also im in orange ca is there any blasting shops there to trust if blasting paint is the answer?

    Thanks ,

Hard to know exactly what type of paint it is.

    Try Lacquer Thinner.

Don't worry about losing existing patina, it'll be back in no time.

Air will turn them grey again. Might take longer in CA than it does in GA, but it will happen.

You could try plastic media blasting, or walnut shells. They would be lots gentler than sand.

DO NOT USE SAND it will ruin your wheels, you need a non sharp edged Medea, glass or plastic bead,

I have done them with glass bead cabinet, turn out looking good and then polish the outer rim. I have done the cast and the cast and steel rims.

I've removed paint from several pairs of magnesium wheels with regular paint stripper. Not only does it remove the paint, but it also appears to etch the mag and leave that nice desirable dark color.
I always coat with Gibbs when I'm done.

I've got the exact Magnesium American 5-Spokes and I had mine soda-blasted with baking soda and they turned out nice.

yea, yea,........ thats what I meant..... buy a cheap soda blaster from harbor freight, 99 bucks I think. Got one a while back, works well on mag and alum, probably all soft alloys or anything actually.

Yes, I was skeptical at first and thought it was gimmicky, but the stuff makes magnesium look amazing.

I took 100 grit sand paper and hand sanded mine then progressed to 2000 grit paper and they shine like a new penny. Took a while but they look great!!
