I bought a set of magnesium front runners. someone painted them the color of patina...anyway i want to fix this problem what is my best solution to do this without ruining the potential patina under the painted surface? also im in orange ca is there any blasting shops there to trust if blasting paint is the answer? Thanks ,
Friend of mine(rebel1 on here) just had some done with glass bead came out looking awesome http://i280.photobucket.com/albums/kk178/marc535/39 Chevy/SAM_8657.jpg
Someone said vinager will turn them grey again? is that true? most all i dont want someone to ruin them. Im tempted just to use my portable blaster on it... does anyone have a glass beader on here close to me?
I have done them with glass bead cabinet, turn out looking good and then polish the outer rim. I have done the cast and the cast and steel rims.
I've removed paint from several pairs of magnesium wheels with regular paint stripper. Not only does it remove the paint, but it also appears to etch the mag and leave that nice desirable dark color. I always coat with Gibbs when I'm done.
I've got the exact Magnesium American 5-Spokes and I had mine soda-blasted with baking soda and they turned out nice.
i can do paint stripper myself ..that would save cash.. does it hurt the casting if left on too long? nooks and cranies maybe hard to do...
yea, yea,........ thats what I meant..... buy a cheap soda blaster from harbor freight, 99 bucks I think. Got one a while back, works well on mag and alum, probably all soft alloys or anything actually.
Yes, I was skeptical at first and thought it was gimmicky, but the stuff makes magnesium look amazing.
Thanks guys for the responces, Im gonna use paint stripper and try the gibbs stuff as well in the end..
thanks guys for all the info , i used paint remover to get paint off , what a mess that was ...anyway looks ok i ended up finding rem oil from remington seems to be the same discription so i used it ...got my firestone gum dipped tires mounted ..here is a pic ..
well i wanted to paint them again so if i use water and just make sure to dry it good before i paint it should be ok? my wheels are 1976 BBS motorsport e30s
I took 100 grit sand paper and hand sanded mine then progressed to 2000 grit paper and they shine like a new penny. Took a while but they look great!!
