got a 53 belair that has a 12 volt conversion. anyone ever replaced the vacuum wiper motor with an electric. If so what will fit??? thanks
A tri-5 Chevy electric motor is a bolt in deal. And you might want to post an into in the "intro" section before someone reams ya a new one.....welcome to the HAMB
Newport Engineering has electric conversions for most cars. Not sure if there is a bolt on stocker for a Merc. Here's a link for newport products, not sure if this is a re-seller or their site. http://www.thedetailzone.com/Newportwiperhome.htm
fwiw; these guys are a reseller. Bob's own site is: New Port Engineering. his units are truly bolt in replacements. also fwiw, the truck in their logo is bob's own truck that he put together almost 30 years ago. still looks great; runs great.
I bought one of their motor assemblies for my Safari and couldn't be happier.I struggled with vacuum wipers for more than ten years before finally converting. For the amount of money I spent on Rain-X over that time,I could have purchsed TWO wiper motors! Good instructions and it took less than an hour to install. The hardest part was bolting on the wiper knob! The set screw is at 12 o'clock and on the Safari the bottom of the dash curves out there blocking easy access to the set screw. Not a big deal but annoying. They are only single speed wipers(a 2-speed with delay is available but more money)but perform great. The Detail Zone might be part of New Port Engineering as that is where mine came from.Cost $180 shipped.
Five minute job putting Newport motor on my '52 Chev. Works great....maybe a bit more than 5 mins cause you gotta adjust them a bit...but real easy.
i bought one of the conversions from newport engineering for my 49 chev pu. i thought it was a little pricey [180 bucks] but it fit exactly, was well worth the money.. the kit works just like they advertise and goes right in with no problems
Before I bought the New Port kit I had purchased a supposedly re-built 56 Chevy wiper motor at a swap meet for $150.That was cheap as the motors are the same as early Corvettes and they get telephone #'s for those babies! It lasted 15 minutes before all the smoke got let out of it.
How hard are they to install on a fully assembled and wired car? I couldn't imagine it being too easy with all the shit behind the dash.....I REALLY want wipers though, but if I have to pull the dash back out again I'll probaly stick with the rain-x. I HATE HATE HATE reinstalling dashes.
Nothing up under the dash is ever fun and I really hate getting stuck in tight spots but I don't have any real nasty memories of this one. There's a fair bit of room up there once you get yerself in the right posi. Pete
