I have a 56 tbird 312 cant get it to idle has strange sounding fluter in exhaust I put a vacume gauge on it has about 12 to 16 but needle jumps like crazy has been seting a long time before being run before starting it I ran a compression test on it one cylinder was a little lower than the rest just looking for some one to give me a few pointers where to look the carb adjust screws make no differnce when in or out has a new gasket kit in carb but secondary diaphrame was not changed have ti crank up idle to get it to run at all at low speed thanks for any help
thanks I was thinking along the same line I am going to pull plugs run compression test in AM hope it is a bent push rod or something simple without pulling the heads etc
I had major issues with the vacuum fluctuating on mine. I was also loosing antifreeze though. Come to find out my head gasket had rusted apart between two of the cylinders. From what I could tell...the engine had never been apart.
did compression test one dead cylinder pulled valve cover had a pushrod out of place replaced it back in the socket ran compression test it did come up but low drove it around a bit got it warm seems to be runing better all the time this car sat for twenty years so I guess I cant expect mirricles regasketed the carb but still really cant get a smooth idle out of it vacume gage is steady now but low compression on other cylinders is around 80 maybe why low vacume no smoke so might be just rings stuck this motor is super clean under the valve covers like it has been worked on now if I could figure out why the fordomatic will not back up sometimes when hot adjusted band did not make a difference just got done havinf new torque convertor seal front pump bushing and filter but transmission had alot of goo in it
I just had a problem with a 292 that had been idle for about 20 yrs, found a cam lobe worn down and valves not seating fully and were black completely around the seats on a couple of cylinders.I had to unstick the motor with mm oil and I started it after pulling it out of the vehicle it was in.I thought that or I was hoping that it was ok.all cylinders had from 120 t0 140 lbs. compression.I put the engine in and didn't run 50 miles till the #3 cylinder started a miss and turned out cam lobe worn off sending metal through out engine.I have engine out know rebuilding it,I knew that the engine had very little miles on it, and that is why I decided to use it however cam oil passage in bearing was the problem. Good Luck on yours,Veeee8
In the old days a friend bought a 55 ford Tudor sedan 292 that had no power despite good comp. etc. When he removed the carb for rebuild he found a 1/2" open end wrench in one of the manifold runners.Ran like a champ after that was removed.
Check to see if the heat riser is stuck on the right side exhaust manifold. Should move by hand (when cold);-)
man, my buddy found a pair of channel locks under the valve cover of his '50 caddy, too. WTF is up with PO's?
