I'm thinking of trying to brush on a thick layer of Rustoleum Satin Black to my 50 ford. Then, go back and buff out the brush strokes. Thru research I've found that this is how they used to paint model-A's. But, my question is: If I do this and it looks decent (I'm trying it out on some spare doors I've got).... is there a UV Clearcoat that's Flat that I could add over the top to add some protection so maybe the darkness of the black will stick around a lil longer. And I want something reallly flat that wouldn't add any more sheen. I searched around a lil but, didn't really find a specific answer to the combination I want to try. Any input is appreciated. We used Duponts Hotrod black on the 1953 Chevy here recently and the black is just too shiny. I didn't want to use it on the 50.
There's PPG Flex-n-flat clear coat. I've never used it, but seen it on some cars. I don't know if it has the "lack of sheen" you're going for, but you might want to look into it.
dunno if this will help keep it from fading or not.. Question - why brush?? If you have a compressor and a $10 gun I'd spray it. This will ***ure coverage and that you get into all the nooks and crannys, plus not sanding! Used to do this on equipment at my last job and it works great.. you just have to thin it a bit...
Do you have Tremclad in the States? They have a semi-gloss black that is the ***s. Nice suede finish, and no need to clear coat. Rustoleum might make a semi-gloss, come to think of it.
cut that satin black R/Oleum with lacquer thinner about 10-15 percent or so till it will spray-that works well.it lasts fine with no C/coating. my 58 has been outside two years and still looks like the day it was sprayed,
You can adjust the "gloss" you get from PPG Flex-n-Flat clear by changing the mix. Probably something around 45% to 60% gloss should get you close to freshly painted DP90.
Rustoleum ****S. I had it on my old 82 coupe, I did it to cover up someone elses ****ty primer, came out decent, but the paint is not up to par, rubs off sorta, and starts to fad a lil bit.... Sure looked pimp at night and in the rain though Heres a shot of it....
I am just going to get all the body work done and get this primer from the paint shop and clear over it, skip the paint and go right from primer to clear for now. If it looks like **** then ill think of something else. Eastwood also sells primer in a spray can thats compatable with "normal" automotive clear coats. Or as I have been told, which could be wrong.
So, is this DP-90 stuff what everyone is using? I'm gonna have to go do some more research on that stuff. Is it made by Dupont or what? Sounds like you guys have had mixed results from rustoleum. And yes I've got a paint gun, I just had a random idea for being different... it may not pan out to be the best option. lol. Thanks for all the input.
Rustoleum sells a clear also. But ive had semi gloss on a fence for 2 years. Still looks the same. Also Rustoleum takes about 2 days to fully dry. and is a ***** to get off. You also need to test primer compatiblity also. Rustoleum auto primer ****s. Semigloss has a alot of shine to it also. You may want to try satin black or flat black. Mixing the two might give ya what ya want. Its 7 bucks a quart so testing aint gonna break the bank. Spraybomb cover well also. Just thinner than if you shoot it out of a gun.
