If memory serves, the '50 Specials had 248 on stick shift models and 263 on automatics......'51 thru '53 all had 263. It is the last digit in the engine serial number that has some significance, but it indicates the series in which it was installed, not the engine displacement. In your number for instance, that last digit is ' 4 ', indicating a 40 Series (i.e. Special), ' 5 ' would indicate 50 Series (Super) and so on.

If the starter can be used to turn it over a P&G displacement checker would tell you in a heartbeat. The tech guy at most drag strips and circle tracks has access to one.

My previous post (#3 above) has been bugging me since I wrote it. It is in error, according to the Standard Catalog of American cars. The SCoA says ALL 1950 Buick Series 40 (Specials) were equipped with 248 cid engines. The 1950 Series 50 (Super) vehicles ALL had 263 cid engines. Transmission type did not matter as to the engine displacement but did vary the horsepower rating a small amount. 1951/52 Series 40 & 50 were equipped with 263 cid engines. 1953 Series 40 were 263 cid straight 8's and 1953 Series 50 & 70 were 322 cid V8's.

Sorry for the previous erroneous info.........I hate it when that happens! :)
