How bad is it to do a "Neutral Drop"?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by HotRod28AR, May 17, 2005.

  1. How bad is it to do a neutral drop? Does it not really effect anything, or will it rip the hell out of the transmission?

Depends on the trans and car. You can neutral and reverse drop a TH350 in a T bucket all day. Try it with a 700R-4 in a '55 Chevy and you'll be walking home.

Almost didn't make it home from the drags that day.

  9. What do you hope to accomplish by doing a neutral drop?

Besides make your transmission guy happy?

It is perfectly OK as long as done at above 3500 rpm, any lower than that you run the risk of only partly damaging your drivetrain. This was a joke question right?

  17. WTF? Dont hammer me too much. I Knew it was bad, I was just wondering how bad it really is.

Back in the mid 80's when I was a p***enger (meaning not old enough to drive) my older brother did neutral drops every time we went out. 1974 Chevelle/Malibu 4 door sedan, 350/350 turbo. Grandma bought it new and gave it to us around 1985. That was nice of her.

Brother Mike did one too many drops. One day we had to drive it home in reverse. "I don't know what happened Dad. It just wouldn't go anymore."

My brother taught me well. In my 66 Chevelle I did neutral drops every time I drove it. My trans held up fine - still in working order. But then again it was a stock motor and trans 350/350 turbo from a 1975 Chevelle/Malibu wagon. Nothing with any real power.

Let us know when you have to drive home in reverse or ride in the cab of the tow truck.

A buddy back in HS used to neutral drop his '69 Camaro 327 2 spd Powerslide all the time. It never gave out! I sure wouldn't do it though.

  23. These guys don't know ****.

"Neutral drops" won't hurt your ****** if you do them with the rpm above 6000rpm.

    Sam.

  24. Yeah but everyone knows you wont get the full effect unless you dump some nuts down the carb, plug the exhaust and fill the gas tank with diesel fuel first;)

Neutral drops are fun but Reverse neutral drops are better!!!!!

JJ They leave fishhooks like this!!!!!!

  28. Mercman1951 can vouch for this, I think he saw it happen...

I had a buddy in HS that ran around in a mid 80's Delta 88 moredoor. 307/200r ******, way high gear (prolly a 2.76). The car was bone stock ceptin' a Performer intake and carb, and Corvette aluminum rims.

He did a 6k plus neutral drop on wet pavement one night, in front of a cop... I never laughed so hard in my life! Ever seen a u joint fly?:D How bout the driveshaft it was attached to?

    Good times. Good times...

a buddy of mine used to do them often, even ones rolling backwards down a hill. On a stockish car it's not too bad, just puts a lot of wear on the bands quickly. In a car with any real power, it will blow the trans apart. I knew a guy that had a 79 Camaro with a serious motor, he hated the car because it was always breaking down. So, he did a full on 5000rpm drop, and literially blew most of the valvebody out of the trans pan. I would have liked to seen it, that would have been funny as hell...

Back in 1965 when I was a kid on a bicycle, a friends older brother would 'hook'em' with a 394 Oldsmobile. Stomp on it in reverse, then floor it and jerk it into drive. Makes a very satisfying 'hook' shaped pair of black streaks on the road. I never did find out how much it cost his father to rebuild the transmission but I bet it was expensive.
