I dropped my merc 3 inches and was told beforehand that I would still be able to remove the wheel. I had to tear up the tires to get them off, luckily they were coming off to be replaced. How do i do this properly without damaging my new white walls other than put the car back to stock height or bags?
put a Small bottle jack between the spring and frame rail, will spread them apart and give you enough clearance to get the wheel out.
where did you jack it up from? the axle or frame? if i can't get the jack under the frame so that the rear suspension hangs, i put a small bottle jack between the frame and axle to give it a little help.
Try jacking it up one side at a time with the jack under the frame just ahead of the spring perch. Three inches is just not that much of a drop on one of those and if you have stock shocks they should let it drop down enoughto get tires on or off.
Two jacks, one under the 3rd member to get the wheel off the ground and the other jack under the frame on the side the tire needs to come off. Raise the body and let the wheel droop until the wheel/tire will come out from under the wheel well. I still have to remove the caliper and rotor on my 66 Coronet to get enough clearance.
Jack up the frame to raise the body . The use another jack under the axle to lift the wheel off the ground and remove wheel.
jack it up from the frame and let the rear end hang, if you still can't get them on then you will have to disconnect the rear end although if you only lowered it 3" I doubt this is the case. the 55 pontiac in my driveway is so low you have to disconnect the rear end to remove the tires, not pratical in any way, but cool is usually not practical. the pontiac is not my car, nor would I have done that if it was...
well I jacked it up from the frame and let the rear end hang. Ill try a jack between the spring and the frame to see if i get more clearance.
Let the air out of the tire and it should help and make sure you have a spare that will be able to be installed on the road without having to carry a compressor.
I've got a 3" block in my '50 Ford and have to slide the brake drum off before I can get the wheel/tire off the car.
pretty much the same body style as the 52-54 fords(I have 54 ford)! which people have always had problems getting the rear tires off even stock with a fatter tire or if lowered only a couple inch's ,there's just not a lot of room in there, i have to let the air out the tires and slide the drum off from the back of tire to get mine out and i have 3inch blocks and worn out leaf springs, i have heard of guys using a bottle jack on top of the axle in between frame but haven't used that method yet, then there's always dropping the leaf springs and axle to get a aired up tire off or on,using a combination of the method's everyone posted you should be able to get them off, lowering the car,its the price you have to pay to be cool!!!!!
I was concerned about this same problem on my 40 Merc because they have smaller fender openings than a Ford. I put airshocks in the rear so if I have a flat away from home I use my small jack to raise the car and pump up the airshocks with my portable aircompressor that plugs into the lighter. This gives me just enough room to wiggle the tire out and install the spare. The airshocks move the rearend away from the frame about 2 or 3 inches, just enough.
i had to pull my drums and wheel off together...i'd have to prop the tire up into the wheel well off the studs and wiggle the drum off and i had just enough room to get the tire out of the wheel well afterwards. was on a dearched & 3" blocked '50 chevy but same idea...try it!
my problem is that the studs are keeping me from getting the tire all the way in. I tried a 207 70 15 and its a little better but still cant get them in. as soon as i get a chance I'm going to unbolt the leafs to get them in. I hop i never get a flat on the back.
This is what I have to do on my '54 Ford, and let the air out of the tire also to get the tire off and back on.
Just go and buy yourself a bottle jack, problem solved. Got 2 65 aussie falcons low as, 15 and 17 inch wheels with next to no clearance sideways, rear fenders are half radiused and with the bottle jack method you can remove them without even touching the side!!!
We put air shocks on my dads 49 merc and keep a portable air compressor in the trunk that you plug in your cigarette lighter and put lighter plug in the trunk... it worked for us plus adjust ride height where you want it..poor mans idea lol
