OK, I didn't want Blacktop to die without a fight. I've been working my ass off on this 'zine and getting nowhere due to print costs. Well for now Blacktop Graffiti will be going 'online' as a downloadable 'zine. It's not perfect but it's a start. Now the problem lies in that my computer died. I mean an ugly death. Issue #3 was on that hard drive as well as the almost done #4. I've been working on getting it back but no luck so far. I've been told it might get pricey. So if you have sent me anything, please send it to me again. Be it on hard disk/email whatever. If you have something new send it too! Issue #4 was shaping up to be killer and it sickens me that this happened. Yes I know your suppose to back up files. I was trying but it died quick. Again I want to thank everyone for all the kind words and support. This 'zine was built by the HAMB brotherhood and sisterhood. I don't want to let it die. Thanks. Randy
Im sure you may have already explored this option but there are services out there that can recover data on burnt HD. They aren't guaranteed to recover everything but I think the bigger named places do an amazing job of finding what you need so its not totally lost. Those spinning disk HD can be tricky but may not be a 100% screwed. Only it may just run you anywhere from $400 - $1800.... Hope that helps. Cool mag btw.
If your drive will still spin, go out on-line and look for hard drive recovery software. We did that recently at work and recovered about 90% of the data we were hoping to save. The software we used had a trial period that allowed us to use it free for 30 days.
Unless the computer burned up, the files can be retrieved off the hard drive! Hope it gets better.... I need to send you a new ad!
Let me know if there is anything I can do to help. I'm an art director for a publishing company. I'd love to see it back in action!
Wow. A case for backups if I ever heard one. Ok, since the sucker's dead anyway- this will sound weird - try freezing it. The hard drive, I mean. Might get it to spin up long enough to copy your issues. Obviously- don't freeze it, and then expect to BOOT off of it - use an external enclosure. And... hard drives are cheap. Buy one. Use it as a hot backup. I guess you've learned that lesson already.
Totally depends on the type of failure, I've recovered data that way from a crashed disk. Your mileage my vary though.
I've had a certain amount of luck recovering files off of a "frozen" HDD. If possible, keep it in the freezer for at least a day or two. I wrapped mine in a flexible gel freezer pack to help keep it cold while I was working with it.
Good luck on the upcoming issue. Having put out 2 issues of my Fuel Line Magazine in print I can appreciate how difficult it is to keep a 'zine going.
Randy I can't wait for the 4th issue I am sure there will be some great stuff in there for us to see. So how will we be able to view the issue when it is ready?
Actually you can order back issues right from the website www.blacktopgraffitimagazine.com It'll be downloadable only online for awhile. Stay tuned,,,
