And it's SMITHY'S not Smitty's. Has been since the 1920's, the original Hot Rod muffler. And it's not OK to trash our company any more than it is to trash Red's or any other fine company on here.
Since we're discussing diameter of exhaust here, I just want to confirm we're talking about the outside diameter, and it's about 16 gauge?
Yes it's always O.D. sized to fit the shoes of the bender. I always stocked 2" in 14 ga. but 1 3/4' only came in 16 ga. 2" comes in both gauges. Be sure to ask. It will probably be 16 ga. at a parts store.
Yes, it's Smithy's, but I've heard guys call them Smittys for almost 50 years even while looking at the Smithy's logo. The miss-pronunciation that bugs me is Eldebrock instead of Edelbrock, but I hear it alot. If you know what they mean what does it matter?
I've got fenton duals w/ 2" straight pipes about 5' long (side dump) on a fairly stock 37 221. 40bore and zephr valves. Might put a dual carb but it's running fine now and I have other things to do :] Sounds fine but planing to redo with 1 3/4" and porters very soon. Hoping to get a little rap to it.
8BA , offy heads, offy dual intake with a couple of 94's. Red's Ceramic coated headers, 1 3/4" straight piped. sounds like music to my ears!!!!
Doc, I have 1 3/4 inch exhaust. Fenton headers and 18" Brockman mufflers put in reverse. It's a 276 inch Merc. Flatty. I think it sounds real good. Pm me and I'll give u more info. If u want I can send you some videos to give u a rough idea of the sound. Sent from my iPhone using TJJ
Here's a link to another thread with Flathead sound clips. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=552603 I'd love to see flathead sound clips from guys who own the car, with a brief description of the engine and exhaust components/dimensions. I'm really leaning towards going with a 1.75" exhaust. I was assuming a 2.00" - 2.25" exhaust would be best, but my car isn't built for speed. I would like a great sound though.
Here is a You tube link. I am trying to figure out how to post another video from my phone. Bear with me. http://youtu.be/iQBpREQYEoQ
Krash, Awesome, thanks... that video answered about ten other questions I had too. Interesting how you went under the rear axle with the exhaust. I also listened to the drive bys... Awesome!
I've been thinking about building my own muflers just to see what sound I come up with. I'll label them Smitty's just for the hell of it. Hope I don't get all pissy when someone calls my Smitty's Smithy's. Now where did I put that Eldebrock Preformer? Oh, there it is over by that Hearst Shifter.
Thanks Krash, sounds great! <object width="560" height="315"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/08Arte_Of0M?version=3&hl=en_US&rel=0"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/08Arte_Of0M?version=3&hl=en_US&rel=0" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="560" height="315" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true"></embed></object>
