It should be no mystery to ANY of us that there are lurkers and trolls who frequent these boards and follow our builds. The cars ready to debut, you're excited about it, and make an announcement that the car will be at ___________.

Now the thieves know where your car is, that you'll likely be asleep, and that your house is probably unattended! Fellas, use CAUTION while posting here!

I'd be interested to know what the ratio of cars (specifically hot rods and customs) stolen is between homes, shops, and at a car show. These guys know our guard is down and security is relaxed at a car show. I would hardly think that stealing a hot rod from a place where a bunch of hot rodders are is a good idea, but maybe its the "hide a tree in the forest" thing. Could simply driving a car out of a host hotel parking lot be that easy? I guess we really don't know the majority of other car owners there, so maybe it makes sense.

I know if I saw someone driving YOUR car (insert your name here) I would do whatever was in my power to stop them. You could thank me later with a Pepsi and a hand shake, or ***** at me because you were over insured. Your choice. :)

the answer is as simple as a wooden cloths pin that can be used in many ways to detonate of set off an event. If they are gonna steal it they are gonna part it....but they might have to wait until the fire cools off first!....com on guys start thinkin outside the box.

Rather than risk being caught stealing parts in the owners parking spot, thieves are finding it much easier and less risky, to steal the whole car and drive it to a secure location.

On June 4th, 2005, at the Modesto Auto Theft Awareness Fair, a crew of three demonstrated how fast car thieves can strip a car to the frame. Using simple hand tools, they were able to strip a car in under 8 minutes
now how far are you willing to go to protect your prized possession? The banks use dye-paks and the money is worthless, your car is insured place a little surprise for them and wait for the smell of smoke ...where there is smoke there is your hotrod...

  4. Every owner needs to take some responsibility and employ an adequate theft deterrent system.
Every owner needs to be vigilant about using it and protecting their property 100% of the time.
Thiefs can't be stopped only deterred to an easier Target. That is why every owner needs to be active, so that there is no easier target.

The professional thief weighs risk vs reward, reward is high and penalty is low if caught, being caught is highly unlikely. You can't stop a pro if you have what he wants. Police, municipal state or federal
government receive ZERO revenues for catching thiefs. it actually costs them.

Insurance companies must pay billions in theft claims yet they do nothing to promote stopping it. Why? Because the number of cars not stolen is far greater and its more profitable for them to pay the claim than stop the theft.

I'll bet that HAMB power is astounding and looking forward to a hambtastic solution to this problem. Some of the most profitable companies in the economy who are hit the hardest by theft don't care.

Hiding in a trailer baiting a thief is not wise.

Von Rigg,I completly feel your disgust with what the world has come too, however, what kind of man could take care of his wife and kids while he's locked up for shooting some bad guys for trying to steal a car. You're damned if you do, and you're damned if you don't. I tell my wife all the time "I want to move out to middle of Wyoming, where I don't have to deal with the riff raff thats ruining my property value" But then a bear would probably eat me.

    INSURANCE IS THE ONLY WAY!
Gps/cell/lojack jammers are cheap [ google them ] and well used by the boy's in midnight auto. I might feel great to shoot a car thief right up to the cell door closing on YOU in central booking. Then who's going to pay the legal bills and take care of your family? We don't think twice to drop $500 on a fender, drop some cash on insurance. Then you can buy/build a new hot rod. If I catch a thief in my home, he's gone. But I'm not going to stand in front of a Judge and explain why I double tapped some crack head for stealing my car. Just my .02

So back to the task at hand...

How do we set up a sting operation to catch these guys and keep everyone safe? I doubt the local PD's would be interested in ***isting, and putting our plans out on the internet would tip off the people who are performing the crimes. What to do???

  11. Decoy rig, with p***engers in the trailer sitting in a parking lot at night during a show.
Make it LOOK like a car was rolled out / or in during the day. However it has to be done at every show because you don't know where they will strike next. The indvidual car clubs should get together and make up a decoy rig at each show.
I like dirty4 's idea mmmm maybe burn a few jerks in the process......

I understand the desire to set up a sting and capture a thief (one of thousands), but as I envisioned this sting operation, I couldn't help but imagine someone locking the trailer full of guys from the outside, then stealing every car in the lot!

Thieves anger me too. I will do what I can to make it difficult to steal my ride, but know nothing I can do will be 100%.

Welcome Bob, didn't know you were hanging out here now! And your thought is hilarious... Sounds like a great scene in a comedy!

Yet another valid point with no easy answer. With 25 plus big shows with 2000 or more cars, and not every show resulting in a theft, the odds are slim. Still, something has to be done.

Maybe the parking lots need to be shut down with only one entrance/exit and each car needs to be "checked out" before its allowed out. Just a parking ticket with matching stub or something. Enclosed trailers to be checked before leaving/entering, etc.

Kinda gives new meaning to the term "G***ers". Can you imagine a thief hearing about a trailer full of G***ers? "Oh boy, G***ers!", then opening the door " Oh ****, g***ers! Phew!".:rolleyes:

Exactly what I was thinking. After no action at the first, third or tenth show people would get complacent. We would all love to catch the ***holes in the process, but just like in your home or business, it's easier and more cost effective to deter than to catch them in the act.

It seems that most of the thefts are from hotel parking lots. They have a limited number of exits. How about using the HAMB to organize groups for security at the hotels of these shows. Mainly need to watch the exits. You would need to get approval from the hotel (and possibly and insurance policy), but I'm thinking that would be possible. If a certain hotel didn't allow security, post it up here and don't use that hotel. I think that would deter most thiefs and possibly get the hotels to hire their own security.

    Just my two cents.

  21. If you and I ever have something personal I will be sorely surprised and the first to back down. Not because you are healed by the way. ;)

Hey I got my Pal a new dog house , he aint too sure of it yet..but i put it where he could look down the drive way and across the yard..Its pretty big, and he just fits in it;)

  24. No one ever lets me **** shoot someone, I have wanted to do that for a long time.:(

Actually along the lines of policing our stuff there is an option that goes along the lines of the whole trailer full of fellas thing.

There is a non-profit called some kind of Angels or something like that. Been around for ever; they roll around policing the ghettos were little barets and T shirts. I can't remember the real name of them.

Anyway if someone was a mind to they could set themselves up just like that only instead of ghettos they could roll around to big car shows etc and do the same thing. I am not sure how to set it up but I'll bet you could get ahold of them and find out how they are arranged. Maybe someone knows the name of them, I am sure they have a site.

    Just a thought.

If there's donuts I'll come by and show him how it works for a day or two. Wouldn't be the first time I slept in the dog house. :D

When we still lived in th seedy part of town my guy actually got ahold of a fella in the back yard one night about 2 AM (give or take). It was my night off, he got me up and I thought he needed to go out for a whiz so I just opened the door.

All at once I heard him growl and a fella hollared G#$ Damn a dawg. Then a scream. The dog came in with blood running out of his mouth. I checked him and he was OK, so I figured I was going to have to sweet talk someone to not put my dog down. They do that here if your dog gets someone.

I made a pot of coffee and sure enough about an hour later the cops showed up. I opened the door and handed the cop a cup of coffee and stepped out. He said, "Mr l....tz, did your dog bite someone tonight?" I told him I let him out to pee and he came back with blood in his mouth and I thought he must have killed a rat.

the cop said he didn't kill him but he probably wouldn't be having children any time in the future. I guess the guy called the cops on me because he was dag bit. Turned out he had several warrents for B&E and B&E with ***ault. DOH.

The cop let me look at him so I would know who to watch for but he also told me that he told the guy that I was crazy and that he was lucky that it was the dog that got him. I never saw the guy again.

Always helps if folks think you are one brick short of a load. ;)

The cop did thank me for the coffee and said he would bring the cup back later.

a head shot would be easier..and less sheet metal work for me patching up all the holes:D

I think the group effort thing needs to start being employed..get a group of 6 to 10 like minded hot rodders at a show and take shifts watching the cars and tow rigs.
do it very covertly, dont stick out..and have a way to get all 6 or 10 guys out of the sack or where ever they are at , if something were to go down
and to know whos car is whos and who should be driving it

and If your watching my **** I'll be more comfortable if your armed and dangerous:cool:
