Does anybody know if it is possible to lower a 62 pontiac tempest with a stock 2 speed auto trans-axle without the back wheels tilting like a volkswagon?? Is there a lowering kit that would work like for a corvair, vette, or maybe even a volks wagon that could be modified to work??? any ideas???
    Thanks!!

not 100% but I think the suspension id similar to the Corvair. The only way I know to lower the rear on one if those is spring or bag/hydro setup. The front is closer to the Skylark/F85 if I remember right and your best be would be bagging or spring again. I have been told that a Nova/ChevvyII spindle will swap in the Skylark so I would guess it would work on the tempest as well so you might be able to get a 2" drop there.

It's a swing axle rear. I don't know how to lower it with out a bunch of camber. You might be able to swap in a later Corvair IRS axle. Or raise the entire rear trans axle in the body. Lots of work.

I don't think you'll be able to lower it more than an inch or so. As mentioned, since it's a swing axle rear there's no way to get rid of the camber without extensive modification.

  6. Best way with any trans axle is to move the entire ***embly as a unit. Its not easy but it can be done.

Ther is another option but I'm sure you don't want to hear it so stick with moving the entire ***embly as a unit.

With the rope driveshaft, swing axles, transaxle it's not an easy prospect, how much are you looking to lower it?

I am hoping to drop it a little. I really dont want to raise the trans, ropeshaft, and re-angle the engine to keep the proper geometry! Maybe I can compress the spring a little without changing the camber much???

A hunch... soften the rear spring(s) and somehow extend the upper suspension links to tilt the wheels outward and get the camber back to OEM specs? This being said by a guy who only drove a 63 for awhile, I have no idea what the Tempest IRS looks like in the flesh. Gary

As I remember my Temptest was swing axle. Not IRS. See my post # 3 above. As such, no "upper link" to get the wheel back straight.

Not to bring this back from the dead, but does any one know if the 61-62 tempest shares the corvair suspension? I am looking to put my 62 on air ride come spring and have heard they share the suspension, but I have not been able to confirm. If they do I can buy a kit rather than try to make something custom. Thanks in advance.
