did a search and couldn't find a thread r.e. making a '29 model a sport coupe into a standard coupe. anyone know of a thread like that? thanks rer_239
Should be pretty straight forward. Cut the top off a coupe and weld it to a Sport Coupe. I think the windshield A pillars and the doors are the same?? Will be watching to see what others come up with.
I don't recall a thread like that but someone on here must have done it before. I think that sport coupes have different quarters but I don't think it would be noticable right off. I like the idea. banginona40 has the right idea. There may be some alignment issues but nothing major that I can think of. Should be pretty straigh forward.
I am trying to figure out why you would want to? Sport coupes and business coupes are much rarer than std coupes - and just as cool imho. Here's one of my favorites - 1928 Business Coupe....
You shouldn't have to cut anything. You'll need the proper wood kit, along with the roof pieces, On the 28-29. the roof is in individual pieces.
For 28-29's, it's actually easier to find Sport Coupes and Special Coupes than Steel-back Coupes. If you can find a top off a Steel-back Coupe (good luck!) it's simply a bolt on. There is no difference in any of the quarters, doors, cowls, etc. I've seen some 29's with 30 roofs welded on, but they never really looked right, especially at the belt line.
If you have a Sport Coupe but want a Coupe, I don't think you'd have much trouble finding someone to trade with you. Sport Coupes are COOL, man! A little out of the norm, but not weirdo status either. Cool, unusual, and somewhat rare Henry steel. I've got a '30 and I'm going to try to emulate an A400, but in coupe version. Call it an A399, the the top will roll back and fold up on the tulip panel, while the door frames and top bows stay in place.
I took that photo at the Western Nats in San Jose in 1980 - that and the Fat Jack '28 roadster which was parked next to it have been permanently etched in my memory ever since....
I put a '29 standard coupe top on the rear quarters of a sport coupe. I bought a bunch of pieces to make a car and the lower rear quarters were from a sport coupe, while the top was a standard coupe. Like CornFed and 31Apick-up said you just bolt the pieces of the top and wood kit together. Ford made less standard coupes then sport or special coupes, but all 3 used the same lower rear quarters. I have a 28 special coupe that I'd love to make into a standard coupe but have not had much luck finding a standard roof.
Those 3 Window 1928/29 steel back Coupes are getting real common - here's another.... http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/NO-***LE-VIN-/280739627983?pt=US_Cars_Trucks&hash=item415d62c3cf
like most this is a low-budget build. after checking the pictures and prices of the wood kits and the fabric top kit for a sport coupe i figured the only way i could finish this before the turn of the century (next) was to go the standard coupe. i found a pair of the side window pieces and the pieces over the door, now i have to convert those pieces from too short nail on to approx 3/4" longer (top to bottom) that will bolt on to the existing flange on my sport coupe. and find a sedan rear panel, w/back window, and maybe get a station wagon top to finish the roof. hopefully, this will be way cheaper than all that wood. thanks for the input! rer_239
Ford used same quarter panels for Sport, Special,(leatherback) and std coupe. the top unbolts and is removed, this is why std tops so hard to find everyone made roadsters, the top for my coupe came from the Shasta fire from the early 90's, I started w/sport panels, no problems. o yeah top cooled normal, no water hit it, chopped and metel finished w/out any problems.
