Anybody know the history of the 50 Ford Doug Thompson built for Ed Guffey, circa 1987. I understand that Mr. Guffey passed away several years ago and the car was eventually sold. I heard that it's going to be auctioned off soon, and wondered if anyone knows how many owners it has passed through over the years. Also what driveline, who did the interior, etc. Has it been changed from the original configuration and or color? Any information would be appreciated. Stu
I dont know much about it... I think this is the last photo I have of it... but I have no idea when it was taken... it has some ugly flames added to it.. also the hubcaps are now 53 Caddy... Dont know who owned it at that time... if you find out more... please post. Here is the car how it was built first, with two more of Doug Thompson's creations...
I saw that car when it won the Bradley award...that car is super nice...The flames SUCK put it back the way it was!!!
Yes- Bob Sipes did the interior, at the time of the build-a late model 302was installed.---Did you notice the flames on the trunklid. Although the wider whitewalls do look better. The flame job might of been a way to match the paint to cover up rockchips. On my dads Vicky- might have to add a subtle scallope job for the same effect-that is rockchips, not flames.
Rockchops on the trunk?.... could be, but my guess is that the owner got "bored" with it and wanted to ad some of his own personality... And that nearly never goes to well... Here is another photo of how it used to look.... I agree on the wider white walls, they do look better on it
I meant the rockchips on the front end. But you knew that. The interior was pretty classy for that time-period, was coppied many times. It seems like the last few photos of it that I saw were at the Turkey run at Daytona, I think it was for sale to. Can`t remember what year.
Yeah I knew that! Wheels Magazine article from September 1988... its in Swedish... Noticed that the car in the magazine article does not have the way over the top pinstriping!!! And this one shows the interior a bit better... For some reason I have never been able to get enough photos of this car. It was either not shown a lot, or just not photographed.
The car looks good for a Busines coupe. Looks good in person too. The article in Midwest Rod and Machine in 88 states the grille is from a 54 Chrysler Imperial . Only 400 were produced. Ed had trouble finding one. The bumpers are 51 Ford units with 58 Chevy center sections. Any news about the auction yet. Feb-March issue- made the cover too.
About 14 years ago this car was owned by Barry Sterneck here in St. Louis when he was running Show World Promotions. (He might have taken it to a couple of Darryl Starbird's shows.) This would have been in probably, 1996...1997 at the latest. I was showing my '53 Buick Special at the time, and one night shortly after he got the car we were parked next to each other at a Cruise Night. Barry had put Colorado Custom Retro wheels on the Front...he told me the car was low enough in the back -and with skirts- he didn't need to buy 'em for the Rears ! The car was beautiful to see in person ! Doug's work was flawless. Barry also, owned the '55 Chevy Barris Custom built for Jim Seaton for awhile (which he purchased from fellow-St. Louisian Kurt McCormick, it's previous owner.). He eventually sold, or, traded both of those cars many years ago. Barry never kept a car very long ! JK PS: Talked to Doug about this and his other cars at Darryl Starbird's a few years back. Here's a pic from that weekend. Doug is just one of the BEST !
I remember that show.It was the Leadsled Spectacular in Holland Michigan. The year was 1988.What a sight that was.I also remember the year that they had brought out the cars to Sled Scene East.
I too remember that car in '88. I was the Canadian Colonel at that time, just for interests sake, just around the corner sitting on the lawn was the Kenz and Leslie streamliner too! I miss the Leadsled Spectaculars in Holland!
I agree, the ghost flames are hideous. Does anybody know if the colors are candy or not? I find it kind of interesting that this car has not really gotten a lot of publicity or exposure, as compared to other customs. Anybody know the timeline of events when Mr. Guffey owned it, i.e. his date of passing, or subsequent owners, selling prices it may have attained during its "custom life". Stu
The Midwest Rod And Machine article states It is painted Pearl blue Morano. The two tone effect is created using two different base coats. The Lighter side pannel uses a sky blue as a base while the darker area uses black under the blue. The car rolled into Doug`s shop in the fall of 86 and it made it`s first showing at St Ignace in 87.
For those interested, the 50 Ford custom by Doug Thompson was bid to 35K but a no sale (owner reserve). They never announced the reserve amount. I posted some other sales in another post. Search Doug Thompson. Stu
i own this car and going to sell it if any intersed please contact me at my email timhawley2@yahoo.com thank you
I can tell you that my dad owned the car in the 90s. He lived in Lake Wales, Florida. he owned it for a couple years and sold IT, a 37 chevy and a 54 Buick Skylark to a fellow up north (Indiana or Illinois?).....He used to delight in people looking at the car and him explaining how Doug used parts from so many different cars on it (IE 58 chevy bumper centers) It seems that the flames were on it when he owned it. He never forgave himself for selling it.
For anybody interested, Its listed for sale on the bay...... http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1950...6368747?pt=US_Cars_Trucks&hash=item484215c6eb
