Found a used windshield for my 62 hardtop but it's still in the old car. I know these cars use the rubber seal, anyone give me some tips on how to remove the windshield without cracking it?

Cut the rubber seal off with a utiity knife, push the windshield out from inside the car. That's how I did it at least. However, before you go to the trouble of removing it make sure it's in good shape - most old windshields have a lot of freckles from road grit over the years, and new windshields are readily available and pretty inexpensive.

There MAY be a lock strip (not too knowledgable on early 60's stuff), remove it first. Cut the gasket away, have a second set of hands to help remove the windshield just in case.

Stuart, thanks for the advice and I definitely will check it out, I know my is worn all to hell from debris and what not. Unfortunately this windshield is available but not cheap in my opinion. Don't think I've ever seen one for under $400. I was actually quoted 3k for one once, though I really hope that was a typo....
Basically I cut away all I can and push evenly from the inside with a set of hands on the out side....sound simple enough,,,,I know it won't be.

I just had a new windshield installed in my 66 Satellite, $165 for the gl***, $120 for the rubber (EBAY). 1 hour labor. I had preped it with new paint and trim clips.

haha, yea these windshields aren't $165 on ebay either man, I would have had one a long long time ago if they were. Luckily my rubber is a little cheaper than yours though.

    • break any seal on the outside of the rubber to body
    • cut off the lip off on the inside
    • grab a friend and sit inside the car
    • put some gentle pressure on the screen in both top corners and in the middle
    • gently push the screen out evenly, do not push in one place
    • don't be tempted to push it all out, once the top and sides are out jump out the car and lift the gl*** up and out of the aperture
    Hope that helps

I just checked the Auto City Cl***ic website, their prices have gone up quite a bit since I looked last - a '62 Chevy windshield is $339.00. I think it was around half that when I bought the windshield for my '61 Pontiac, but then again that was quite a few years ago. http://www.autocitycl***ic.com/

Once you've cut away most of the rubber overlapping the windshield on the outside it'll push out fairly easily.
Thanks for that link, stuart in mn, I also have a '61 pontiac and that's the best price for a windshield I've found so far, and I'm in the biz.

If you have the luxury of making a mess, spray the entire inside gasket area (after you cut it away) with silicon.

This way when you push the gl*** out any somewhat attached rubber areas will easily slip over because of the silicon lubricant.

Oh, and wear gloves when messing with gl***.
