    hey all-
I have a 64 chevy g10 van with a seized motor. Thinking of trying to swap in another in line six.

Does anybody know what kind of ****** the 3 spd manual is brhind a 250 from that era? And what it will mount up to easily?

Thought about doing a 292 if it will mount up to ****** ok...or just another 250. Heard the 292 mounts are offset and the 230/250 mounts are straight across.

All the info I've read states these vans had a 194, or 230 in them stock and the 250 wasn't until '66. But, I researched the block casting code and it is a 250 according to that.

I suppose the original 230 could've been swapped for a 250 at some point.

Any suggestions to what would be available to swap or what is interchangeable would be very helpful.

Did the 250's and 292's share the same type 3 spd manual trans?

That trans should work with any Chevy motor.

i did a 283 into my 64 van in 1971. I must have used the stock trans because I am pretty sure I kept the column shift. I do recall the motor box needed to be cut and side boxes made to clear the exhaust manifolds.

Me, I'd stick with a 250 rather than the lesser MPGs for the 292. A rear end ratio swap would be a good thing if it has stock non-highway gearing.

All these years later and I still remember that I could not find a 64/65 p***enger front bucket seat in any wrecking yard in the whole state. I had to settle for a newer van seat.

I put a 292 6 in a 65 Chevy van years ago. The right side motor mount is farther ahead on the 292 compared to the 230-250 engine. I had to make a new engine mount adaptor. The 292 is about 2 inches taller than a 230-250. I had clearance problems with the oil filler cap and engine cover top. The ****** will bolt right up to any 6, and any SBC engine.
I'd stick with a 250, nothing at all to change.

i think there are 2 sizes of holes in the bell housing, but if you are keeping the bell housing and the 3 speed any of the later style sixes will bolt to the housing and fit the ******. 2 sizes of clutchs and 2 sizes of flywheel to crank bolts on 292's so as long as you are aware of that you will be ok.

planning to do the same swap. 292 p***. side mount is moved, easily corrected with a peice of flat steel and 6 bolt holes. you will need to run an electric fuel pump. the flywheel bolts are larger so you need to drill to larger size. 292 is almost 2" taller and will 'barely' fit, i plan on lowering my motor about an inch. the fan will be higher up so figure on modifying the shroud or running electric fan. another option is to lower the crossmember and extent the ****** mount. i know a little about these vans if you need anything else, john

thanks everyone, I found a running 250 w/ 80k orig miles in a 66 shortbed...the guy is putting a small block in and getting rid of the six for cheap

so, I think I will go that route....it should bolt right in.....only tricky part now is: how do you get those things in with the doghouse and all?

one friend said take the seats out and come in through the door.....

I don't have a lift so, I can't set the van down on new motor of lift it up off old one..........

drill out the welds on the doghouse and bolt it back in when done. good time to go threw the wiring, only a few wires and the 8 pin connecter is known for problems. any 50 year old connecter is known for problems. once doghouse is out, it is so much easier and you can sit on van floor instead of being bent over and streching. i removed mine for a head and cam swap, i tried working around it but eventually relized the time i saved by leaving it was nothing compared to what i lost on every other item.

I swapped the non synchro 1st, box out of my 63 c10 for a full synchro box out of a 68 gmc. bolted right up no problem, just had to get an adapter u-joint, for the yoke. the output splines were different.
