well this puts shows like "chitty chitty bang bang" into perspective.. and The Reivers (1969) and i enjoyed them both :D there was a cartoon i can remember growing up this would of been 70s... i was just a young tottler but all the people would get in a dune buggy and fly through the galaxy and then they would show a cartoon. man i loved that. made me want a vw dune buggy from a early age with would get later on in life.. and would also have a vw bug in my life till just couple of years ago when i could no longer drive a stick..

yeah we may have million Chanel on tv these days but i can never find something interesting, thank goodness for the internet.. youtube, google movies etc etc..

I'm pretty sure Norms tub was used in the cl***ic movie "*** Kittens go to College" with Mamie Van Doren, before it started it's TV career.

Well this thread about a somewhat inane show got my mind working and I dug out the July 2011 Hot Rod Deluxe. In the Rickman story that month there is the image I described earlier, and it states that the car was used in "*** Kittens Go to College" with Mami Van Doren. 'Course, they also refer to it as a '27... As far as the beach party movies and such, I'm sure it was back ground in at least one of them, and I'm pretty sure on background for "Lively Set" too.

It wasn't very deep but it was fun and entertaining to watch. And a hell of a lot better than most of the **** sitcoms and other low brow stuff on tv now.

Yep and they made a Hot Rod (I think) cover with it at the time. I remember Norm had a big **** eating grin on his face in the photo.

The original car from the show exists in a museum. I think down in Tennessee or somewhere and it's the only one ever used on the show. I have the catalog from the Harrah's Auction as my Herbie was part of that collection and was sold at the same auction, and even in there is was listed as a 1928 Porter. It's certainly one of the more interesting TV cars of the 1960s, and like most of them it's claimed to have been built by George Barris.

That's probably where the useless piece of trivia stuck in my head. I don't remember ever seeing the movie, but I remember seeing several pictures of Miss Van Doren in the car when I was a kid. Hot Rod was probably the magazine.

If I am not mistaken, Kay Trapp and Normie Poo were best of friends for many mango seasons.

I STILL have only over the air TV. I only get the four major networks and PBS. I don't think I could pay money to have more channels with garbage on it. I am not missing anything from what I hear.

I didn't buy Herbie back then. I was only a young'n then. It's been throught a couple private owners and another museum in the last 20 some odd years since the autcion. The Herbie I ended up was one of the Herbies owned by Harrah's. At the time it was unrestored, still bearing its repaint for Herbie Rides Again, and has now been restored to how it looked in The Love Bug.

Just today I was reading Andy Southards book, Hot Rods of the 50's, and there was a picture and text about Norms T when it was his.

No matter how how corny that show was it's still more watchable than pimp my ride.

Thinking you got the ***le to this thread a little wrong. For us not so young on here this was good TV. Seems to be a lovefest for it and being of that age and seeing what's on TV now-a-days I can understand why. Well it's time to go watch some more ME TV. :D

Until "Coach" came on about all I could remember Jerry Van **** for was "My Mother the Car." Scary thing is I was born in early '61 and by the fall of '65 "MMTC" caught my attention. In '67 or '68? Van **** was at the Douglas County Fair in Waterloo, NE and I got his autograph-thrilled me to death. Wanted the model real bad when I saw it in the novelty store in my home town a few years after the show was cancelled, but couldn't s****e up enough allowance or birthday money to get it before it was gone.

All the sit-coms and dramas of the '60s that had customs or 'cool' old cars, along with the heavy manufacturer tie-ins where all the cars on the series were from one manufacturer ("The Andy Griffith Show" plus "Green Acres" and their linkage with Ford being the most-recognizable) must have shaped my early interest in old cars - the "Porter" being one of them along with the Munster Coach and Dragula, the Tiger from "Get Smart," the Monkeymobile, the Batmobile, Black Beauty, etc...

  24. I was kinda hopeing Norm "hisself" would pop up set it all straight for us. I remember all those cars and shows. It seems like even the "gimmicky" t.v. cars were cooler then. Like there was actually some thought went into them. Now its just gimmicky for the sake of being a t.v. car. But then after seeing the red "Greased lightning" finned beast from the movie, I thought to my self "well its still a starting point for something cool. just needs some good fenders a hood and paint.

    Hello,

I recently found this thread while doing a search for "My Mother the Car.

There were two cars built for the show; Norm's old 25 touring was used as the no.1, or "Hero" that was used in most of the scenes. The other car was the no.2, or "stunt" car and was built by George Barris. There is an episode where both cars are together at the same time.

The stunt car is the one in the Star Cars museum in Gatlinburg, Tennessee. The hero car is in Edmonton, Alberta and owned by Dave Bodnar.
