Hey everyone! To start off, I love this website! It is such a huge help! Im glad I found it. Anyway, I just bought a 66 F100 last weekend. The guy was nice enough to meet me halfway for me to get it. He said that it only needed brake work and paint and body.. Come to find out that after driving it one hour it was 2 quarts low on oil... o well, ya win some..ya lose some... So yeah, it has a 425 and a turbo 460 trans.. The 425 came out of a 70 somethin cadillac. Ive heard they arent too great. Would it be better to just put a 460 in it and a c6? Is the 425 and the turbo trans worth fixing or just getting rid of? I think its loosing oil and not burning it.. I pulled the plugs and they werent black. Also, I was hoping that someone would tell me what all the numbers were on the vin plate. Thanks everyone! 115 8 F100 481 C 09 05000 129 4000 63
I ***ume you're looking at the VIN plate on the door. 115 = wheelbase (short bed) 8 = color code = turquoise F100 =model 4 = interior code = beige vinyl 81 = body type = conventional cab C = transmission = 3 speed light duty 09 = rear axle ratio = 3.70:1, 9 inch Ford 05000 = max gross vehicle weight = 5000 lbs 129 = certified net hp (I think this was the 240ci six) 4000 = specified rpm that certified net hp is measured 63 = district code = Memphis
Thanks fauj and stuart! You were both a huge help! Have any thoughts on the 425? They only made that motor for 3 years. So parts are prolly high..? Thanks again!
I am a fan of a Ford in a Ford and so forth, but there are some exceptions. As far as your 425, I don't have any experience with those. Engine choice depends on what you want to do with it. 460's can make big power pretty easy, but a small block would make an affordable daily driver. What ever the choice, best of luck with a cool truck!
I have a '66 Ford with the short wheel base and narrow bed. I've owned three others. The second came to me with a 460 and a nice auto trans. It went like stink. Both of the others were long wheel base pickups and were just stock .I've had my '66 since '81. Its been updated several times with almost everything except the cab and frame being replaced. It took several trucks to make it happen although there is reproduction body panels available and most good quality. I personally don't like the looks of the tire well fender and did away with mine. Mine is powered by a 351 w and four speed. The big caddy will make your truck honk pretty well. I'd keep it,drive the sh** out of it and enjoy it. Caddy parts are not that hard to find.
1st off WELCOME! The truck is not a 66 but a 63-64 460's are direct bolt in's. Engine all depends on your budget...
The grille on the truck is from a '64 and if ***uming it's original to the truck, then it's a '64. The 425 is a great engine. It's just a destroked version of the 472.
I am fairly sure it is a 65 or 66 with a 64 grille, you can tell by the inner fenders it is a twin I-beam truck. Also the wheelbase listed (115") is for a twin I beam truck, the straight axle 64 and prior short bed is 114".
