That's technically only one question, haha! I wish to be as the tsuru. To live for 1,000 years and fly to the sun. Faithful and graceful as the samurai.

I went tonight to try and get this thing running properly again. I cranked it up and drove it around the block again. The stutter seemed worse. The fuel pressure gauge was still funny. Looked in the carbs and no fuel coming out.

OK, now here's something I can diagnose. There's the fuel filter, regulator, and gauge, in that order from the tank to the carbs. I figure start at the beginning. I pulled the outlet line from the pump and no fuel.

So I guess maybe the filter is clogged from debris stirred up in the tank (it was drained from the swap and filled up when first trying to crank the engine). I bought a new fuel filter and will install it tomorrow. At the same time, I'll blow air through the line going into the tank.

If that doesn't fix the fuel supply problem, I'll move on to checking the pump. Fuel delivery now makes total sense as it was running good and got worse and worse with no real changes other than maybe 1/4 turn of the idle mixture screws on the carbs.

  3. sounds like you are on the right track.

Yeah, nearly out of gas masked as carbs running funny, little or no gas going through the line masked as timing, and all of this complicated by a nearly dead battery in the beginning complicating things and taking longer than necessary to diagnose.

But I'm down to the last 1%. And I swear this is taking longer and more frustrating than the previous 99%, lol. Frustrating because I'm so close and I just want to DRIVE!!!

I figured out the fuel delivery problem. The pivot pin on the fuel pump arm had been slowly working itself out until it was nearly all the way out. The fuel pump was not able to pump any fuel this way. I fixed that and got the idle and throttle response correct. It still has a bit of a stutter under load. I couldn't take more than a couple of test runs before it started raining again.

I'll get back on it tomorrow and double check timing and see if I can get rid of that stutter/hesitation.

I don't know yet. I haven't really been able to drive it very much due to fuel issues. But the limited test runs I've taken leave me with the impression that 1-2 is mushy. And too many rpm's on the 2-3 shift. But, again, I've been making adjustments/fixing problems then driving a block or two. I think I've finally got fuel issues sorted out and now the timing needs fine tuning.

Right now, I've got a stutter/hesitation under load and on the throttle. Timing is currently set at stock 5* btdc. Once I get the carbs and timing perfect, I can start to tune the tv cable.

More test drives up the block. More stutters. Ruled out fuel pressure and coil causing stutters. I put the proper Mallory transformer in place of the standard coil. Fuel pressure was adjusted higher with no effects on stutter, carbs did run richer however. Anyway, plugs look good with proper fuel adjustments. TV cable adjustments were made. One direction made it worse. I adjusted the other direction but rain made more test drives impossible. More tomorrow...

Tater, you are awesome my friend!!

He confirms what Jeremy and I suspected that tv rod (cable in my case) adjustment is causing the stutter.

So maybe after forty eleven hundred more test drives and adjustments I'll be good. Or maybe I'll do that and figure out the pivot point for the tv cable is in the wrong place and do it all over again.

I'm going to try some adjustments tomorrow along with comparing the actual cable pivot point to the pivot point on a stock carb.

But the good news is the engine is running great and throttle response is instant. The TV adjustment is the absolute last hurdle to jump over. Evel says its impossible, haha! But I haven't gotten that frustrated.....YET.

Well, I've adjusted the tv cable til I'm doing it in my sleep, lol. I've got it pretty good, but still not perfect. Good enough to get the truck home though.

It used to stutter between 2 and 3 pretty hard. Now it shifts pretty good from 1-3. It seems to struggle when wanting to downshift when you mash the gas. it downshifts great when slowing to a stop.

I think I will have to modify the stock tv rod to replace the cable. Being threaded gives the rod an infinite amount of adjustment, especially tiny adjustments. The cable cannot compare to the rod for fine tuning. And I think that's what I'm missing. There is also slop in the cable, and I can only take out so much flex, stretch, and play.

Anyway, I'll keep playing with it til I'm satisfied or ready to set it on fire, whichever comes first, haha!

Make sure you have the correct amount of cable travel. If the cable end attaching point is not the correct distance from the throttle lever pivot, you'll never be able to get it right

Non stock Stromberg WW tripower makes this difficult, but not impossible. To get it just right, I may have to end up using a hybrid setup of stock pieces with the WW's. Its still early in the adjustment/test drive phase of tuning the tv cable. I probably make it sound worse than it is, its pretty good. But still not perfect.

Thanks dude!!!!! Maybe the only way I'm an inspiration is that a half a ruhtard like me is able to accomplish anything at all in the first place. :D But thanks, it means a lot!!

I hear you, and I want to fight through it. But there are sinister forces at work. The bit of plastic that mounts the cable to the carb has play. Its funny, as the throttle cable has all metal mounting to the carb. From what I've learned so far by trial and error, this tv function does not like slack/play. There is just slop in the cable I haven't been able to remove yet. I'm going to put my thinking cap on and maybe figure out a different means of attaching the cable to the carb. In fact Lokar probably sells those things seperately.

I'm off to check...be back laters.

I think this will help the cause tremendously...

This is what's on there currently (the grey coffin shaped end). It slides back and forth with the carbs not moving...
