been painting with metalflake for several years now
    always painted with 2k clears
just recently switched to another paint manufacturer and turns out it didn't work out as good as with the old paint i used
some guys told me it's better to use a 1k clear basecoat ,some told me not!!
so what's youre way to paint metalflake?

yep thats what I use is a clear base, paint your base color either black or a color close to you flake depending on effect wanted. Then I mix my flake with a clear basecoat. and after all that I spray 2k clear over all of that.

i used a 1k clear base as well ,but noticed more flakes endin up on the ground..
seems like a 2k clear stays more wet and carries the flake better.. any thoughts?

my car was done by a freind and he applied the clear to each panel and then fired the flake in using a bazooka gun it works realy well for mega flake coverage but you have to do the car panel by panel after this its cleared then flatted back when dry then cleared again its probly and eighth wider now but it looks great

tried the bazooka too ,it's a ''dry gun'' but hard to get equal coverage on large surfaces..

I have roths other gun the hvlp with the big tip. I forget the name but it works good. no I dont use 2k clears because you dont need to base clear works just fine. I painted this just like I said. What is your mix ratio, flake to clear

i use a 2k clear and just mix my flake in it. usualy only use silver flake as i do alot of candy paint... after the flake is on i wet block the whole thing and put more 2k clear sand it with 600 then put the candy on and more clear.. dont know if its right but it has always worked great for me.

that's the way i did it too
but i changed paint brand and got alot of paint not sticking
they told me it's because when you spray on a 2k clear and build up layers , the last layer (most of the time i would spray 2 layers after the flakes ,i use big ones) it causes the paint to not stick ,so every thing would come off..
makes sence cause a 2k paint is a finish paint ,while a 1k stays open for a certain time so other paints can stick..
    but still kinda weird not?

  15. Who's clear are you shooting now?

  16. Subscribed. I would really like to try some flake on a dash. Never had tried it.. I watch
    for more info.
    Thanks

I spray a basecoat color, then add the flake to a clear base. Spray the flake, clear, wet sand and reclear. Done a couple that way and have seemed to work pretty well.

that seems right to me too..
but i still haven't been able to get a good answer on this..

when spraying flakes in a 2k clear ,can i burry em afterwards with just 2k clear?
and how many minutes drying time does it need at what temp..?
cause that's how i've always done it ,and had the best results..
it just went wrong when i had to switch to a different brand ,somehow it didn't work as it used to..

went back to the paintshop and they said i couldn't build up layers with 2k clear ,cause 2k clear closes off and doesn't grab the next layers ,causin everything to come off (which i think is bullshit)

can someone help me out on this ,cause i'm kinda confused..

i know you can do it with a 1k clear basecoat as well ,that's what i'm doin now ,but i notice i'm losing a lot more flakes not sticking on the work than when i used 2k clear..
it also doesn't build up as thick..

  27. How much flash time between coats? You may be waiting too long if it is not binding to the coat beneath.

Essentially what you typed is "How do you paint you are metalflake"?

    You wanted "your".

Edit: After four years on this site THAT is the post that pops my reply cherry?
