Still workin on taillight ideas for my Merc. Anyone have pics or info on what Jesse James did to his 51 taillights. They look lowered and flush mounted; but I can't tell from limited pics. Thanks fellas.
Did you see pictures in this thread? 1951 Jesse James Mercury Paint Job: http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=470810
Thanks DD, I did see that. Can't tell exactly what he did; but that's what makes a good custom; when you like it, but you are not sure exactly why. Anyone else have any input? Is it a cop-out to use 51 merc taillights on a custom merc? I kinda like em after much searching.
I like the 51 Merc taillights too, and I am keeping them. Here's a few versions of 51 Merc taillights that I like, and a few of James' Merc:
I dont think its a cop-out at all. Ford got em right. Im running em in my '51. They work so well, why change em just for the sake of changing em.
Because that is customizing. Making it different to the next guy. But in saying that ... I'm keeping my '49 LIncoln lights just as Henry made them ...
The whole car is awesome. The slight mods to the tail lights really make it stand out from my view. Who can not like the complete ride as it is? I would love to have it in my stables.
One thing I have found is some great guys with great input here on the HAMB. The other thing I know is that whatever I do on these, I am not going to please everyone. But as FlamedAbone said, "you gotta make sure you please yourself when your done." I hope whatever I choose, I am happy when done.
Yes Mr. Ford you are right; they are one of the top contenders. I also gotta thank Abone, Mr. Ford, Gringo51, skotychops, 19Fordy and of course the great slddnmatt for letting me bend their ears on this. Still trying to decide....
those look unaltered nick. they even have the stock gasket on them. i dont think they are lowered either..
Stock ones do look nice, I went with '53 Chrysler because I think the taillights and other little stuff add up to a car being a custom or a mild custom.
Jesse's tail lights are definitely lowered and the bezel appears to be flush with the body as you can just barely see the edge of the sheet metal surrounding it in one of the close ups. Truth is, as long as the tail lights are lowered (just a little) they look good either way. I sent you a PM.
Years ago, **** Dean said that on a couple of the 51 Mercs he did he used 50-52 Chrysler Lenses. They look a little different and fit the contours without much of a problem. Whatever you use...they'll look cool ! Jonnie King www.legends.thewwbc.net
Agreed, I always just thought they were stock. These things sit low as is. I was on the fence about the flush lenses, lowered a bit, but really grew on me after someone told me the idea around here. Then I saw Lee Lucero's Merc and I thought it was a great look. Did it and couldn't stop staring at it, slick look!
You have to do what you want don't worry about what everyone thinks. here are my tail lights on my 56 Delivery some people love some people HATE them I don't give a rats *** it's my car and I drive it everyday so I'm doing it the way I want. on that note Have A Nice Day!!!!!! Ronnie
I have a 1949 Lincoln Cosmopolitan and I am leaving the roof stock (two door ) and the tail light stock the grill I am doing something total custom it has a 460 C-6 and nine inch and disk brakes from a late seventy's station wagon and I m thinking of doing a leather and aluminum interior
I don't know about the rest of ya guys but I wanna see more pictures of your Merc. Happy Trails, Mick
