Quick question... Probably an easy one, but I can't seem to find the answer in a search. Are all 30/31 Closed Car Model A Ford Cowl tanks the same or were some of the Fordor and Vicky tanks a little different than say a Coupe or Tudor Sedan? Pickups?? Were Roadster tanks different?? Thanks for any help!
As far as I know, '30 '31 are all the same with some small diferences at the outlet and shut off valve. Nothing that would prevent one from working on another cowl. Now if your talking '28 '29, yes, fordors were different than other models of those years.
Okay! Thanks! That's what I was thinking. My coupe body needs one and I just want to make sure I don't pick from the wrong litter...
The recess for the dash changed when the speedometer went from oval to round. Some '31's (late I think, but may have also been model dependent) had a steering column support on the dash rail instead of the tank. Otherwise interchangeable. Charlie Stephens
That's true. Forgot about that. It seems that every '30 you find has a broken steering column mount. Funny thing though, even though the separate column drop came out in '31, every '30 body I have ever owned had the correct holes drilled in the dash rail for it.
Late 31 the shut off was put outside of the cab therefor the indented firewall. Laws changed. The shutoff inside the cab leaking gas in the cab was not good etc. etc..
Yep! Thus the "tear drop" in the firewall. My Slant Windshield sedan had this. Thanks again everyone!
Just sold my late 31 tudor sedan deluxe. I think it was Pennsylvania that outlawed the fuel lines in the cab ?
All 30-31 tanks fit all bodies including pickups and AA trucks. Differences are in instrument panel mounting (early oval speedometer or later round speedometer), steering column brackets, and shut-off valve/fuel line hookup. 28-29 tanks are the same for Coupe, Tudor, pickups and AA trucks except early 30 AAs. Cabriolet, Fordor, and Town Sedans use the same tank with a skin overlay which covers the top of the tank with a large fiber pad around the fuel filler neck between the tank top and the outer skin. This overlay allows the regular tank to be used on the taller cowl and makes the spacer necessary in the firewallz of these models. Early 30 AA trucks have 28-29 style bodies and their tanks have half-turn gas caps rather than the threaded ones used on all previous 28-29 style tanks.
AND the real early 1930 tank had extra holes to attach the stainless steel cowl band and may not have the alignment bead rolled it it. Is this starting to sound like the Ford Barn or what?
I've had several 4 door tanks and they fit the other bodies just fine. Having that cover over them keeps them straight, so that's always a plus.
The raised bosses that align the cowl band are about 3/8" long on the very early '30s... about 1" long on the rest of '30... it ran all the way across on the '31s... BUT, good 'ol Henry did what he wanted with what he had when he wanted...
I have a 30 - 31 cowl top. Dash has been cut out. Anyone need this item for their A? Sent from my Nexus 7 using H.A.M.B. mobile app
