    hey guys,

I have heard time and time again about people buying lowering springs for there car only to see that installed the car now sits higher! not having accounted for the fact that their original springs were half a century or more sagged.

so what im wondering is if any of you are running a 3 inch drop spring in the front, what brand you are using and what the distance from the center of the dust cap to the edge of the wheel opening directly above it.

i figure this measurement should give us a real world place to measure where you will end up with the new spring with out having to take into account tire height and etc.

just thought id ask as i may end up needing a new spring for the front of my 46 and i may as well lower it while im swaping parts and itd be a real bummer to get all the 'fun' lowering stuff and have it end up towering haha.

    thanx in advance

had a '47 Ford coupe - do not know exact drop - but, fenders cleared the tires (205/60/15) when turning -reversed eye, dearched, removed two leafs in pack - ran Tokico shocks meant for rear of early 60's Vette. had disc brake conversion. some people run longer shackles - do a search on subject - I did install (2) Durant Monoleaf spring set ups at the lowest setting and car was higher than set up I used above.

im not looking for methods to drop the car, i've done a search and have been around traverse set ups long enough to know what to do.

You can get it down about 3 inches with a Speedway front X member If your not running the flathead. It has no motor mount provision. Another 2 1/2 inches with a 4 inch dropped axle. You can manufacture longer shackles. Easy job. You can remove a few leaves from the spring. The trouble of lowering it other way than a dropped axle is that it brings the frame closer to the axle and you have less travel.

ok so i understand that if i buy a drop leaf and it puts it taller then the saggy old stock leaf that there are other ways to lower it to a satisfying, but im still curious as to what this measurement is with just the drop spring?

lol maybe all the guys with a 46-48 running a stock axel and shackles with a dropped spring are out driving around and not busting out a tape measure for the HAMB.

guess ill try emailing one of the manufactures and asking them.

Sorry Tim, I'm not that far on mine yet. All of mine is in little pieces... I'm planning on the 4" drop that speedway sells, I've seen it installed on one and looks good to me but I didn't measure it..

Ran a Durant mono on a 40 Ford and dropped it 3".. Rode well with no problems......

  11. My '46 has a Durant mono-leaf, Magnum 4" dropped axel, stock shackles, which are longer than after market shackles. Stock wishbone. Had to cut rubber bumpers in half. Rides like a Lowered car.

Original misfit, i suppose that could work seeing as you have stock shackles.

could you measure you car like in the photo, center of dust cap to where the fender starts directly above it? figure if the magnum axel is 4 inches lower then the stock one<-- is it? the stock ones got a step in it to start out with?

then i can take your measurement minus the 4 from the axel and know how low the spring put it! ill figure this out one way or another haha
