i was wondering how to drive frozen kingpins out of a 41 ford axle? also if i wanted to swap the spindles side for side could i just turn the axle around? this is going to be suicide t bucket style
First drive the retaining bolt out, then tap the kingger out. If it's stubborn, use progressively larger Harley Davidson Fine Tuning Instruments (big effin' hammers) til it complies. Flipping the axle/spindles will lead to incorrect suspension geometry; caster angles and ackerman. Why would you want to flip the sprindles?
Probably wants to move the steering arms to the front or something along those lines. Drive out the pin, soak them with your preferred penetrating oil (50/50 acetone/trans fluid works well) let them sit, soak em some more. Then either press them out, or beat them out using said BFH.
Best answer, take the axle to an auto machine shop and have them push the pins out on their press. Don't risk damaging them with a hammer, after all these years they are probably in there solid. If they come out easy it is a sign the axle itself is wobbled out and needs repair.
If you study it, and do a little engineering the tie rod can still work behind the axle on a suicide set-up...where it belongs.
I have taken out quite a few king pins that came out relatively easy, it is not necessarily a sign the axle is bad. You need to check the axle fit with a new king pin to know for sure. A car with the tie rod in front of the axle, makes you wonder what else is screwed up. Just saying.
supporting the axle with a piece of pipe will stop the spring from absorbing the impact of the hammer.
