I am starting on a 55 f100 for my step son and his mom has some concerns about the gas tank location. So I was thinking about remounting it inside a bed mounted aluminum tool box that is currently mounted in the bed. Then thinking if coming out of the side of the box and through the side if the bed with the filler. What do you guys think? It would get the tank between the frame rails. And I won't have the filler coming through the bed floor.
The tank behind the seat has advantages and disadvantages. The disadvantage of course is that you don't want to be in the cab with a gas tank if there is a fire. The advantage is that a tank in that location is more protected than one behind the rear axle like it is on my truck, and it is unlikely that it would ever be damaged in an accident.
Check you laws first ! We can't have a tank in the bed unless it's covered ! There should be plenty of room under the truck to mount a tank . Just a thought ! Retro Jim
i just started my 56 f100 build and I have decided to replace the tank with a mid-fifty rear mount, I think there are a number of dangers of the tanks in the cab, if you get rear ended hard enough the bed will crush in the back of the cab and possibly rupture the tank, if you get t-boned you again have a chance for a ruptured tank not to mention the fumes or if you are a smoker. Good choice in changing the tank location, i rather not exit this earth in flames
In 55 they put the tank under the cab ouside the frame rail directly under the driver seat. That is better than in the cab but still not a good location. With it being a daily driver I am not crazy about the filler being in the bed floor.
Filler tube can come out the side or maybe have a long filler tube to reach the tank where ever it will be mounted . You can also hide the filler tube with a side door cover like most made today . You can have the tank under the bed in between the frame rails for safety and have the filler tube come in between the cab and bed . If in an accident the tube might get smashed but that's an easy fix and not dangerous . How about this , if you make some nice stop lights that are different than stock and mount them in the rear fenders , then have the filler tube behind a tail light . Will be easy to make and hide and the tail lights would give that kustom look when mounted in the fenders . Just an thought . Jim
The 55 f-100 has the tank behind the running board on the drivers side. If yours is in the cab it should be a 56.
My tank is between the left running board and the left frame rail. Leaving only the running board for protection in a side impact. My wife has memories of the chevy trucks with the tanks ouside the rails blowing up on that show date line when side impacted. So I gotta make sure I come up with something.
tell your wife that Date Line NBC set that up. thats was bogus. take a look at all the big rigs going down the road with all that fuel in allumminum(sp.) tanks.if you buy a tank or have one made make sure it has foam in it, as most fuels do.good luck and have fun with it.
i thought of that also, but they didnt have aluminum tool boxes back then. i still think i will try to put it in a box like they put on the back of 30s cars ,in the bed of course
cut the bottom of the box and bed floor out, the tank, would then not be in the bed and the gas fumes [heavier than air] could escape if spilled.
I'm putting my tank between the rails under the bed with a filler tube through the license plate (in a roll pan) like a chevy from the late '60's. I don't know how "safe" a rear end collision would be but hell its better the father away in my book. I'm hanging the rear axle tonight. Ill post pics in a build forum soon enough.
Mid Fifties sells a combination toolbox/gas tank. I sure like the way they look, gonna try to get one when my Ford pickup project makes it to the top of the list. Larry T
