Well I think I've got the rocker arm/oiling system down packed.... NOW I'VE GOT A RATTLESNAKE LIKE SOUND COMING FROM MY STARTER/SLOENOID SWITCH WHEN THE CAR IS ON OR EVEN BEFORE I START IT ..the noise STARTS WHEN I TURN THE KEY FORWARD. I 've done a complete tune up..new Wiring, points, plugs, rotor, condensor, coil, distributor cap...and starter solenoid switch. I bought the car to be my new daily driver...I drove it home but I knew it needed some TLC so I did the tune up. but still took a long tome to start and the battery would go dead in the process. So I removed the starter solenoid and cleaned some corroision off of the terminals. When I put it back on the car started right up but there was a horrible sound coming from the back right hand (p***engers) side of the motor then it stopped but the rattling sound came from the starter solenoid switch, what could it be??? so I went out and bought a new starter solenoid switch and made damn sure I connected it correctly. the car started right up but, still the rattling sound ???? and add to that the cable that goes to the starter got hot and the solenoid got very hot too. HELP....TD
I got a brand new solenoid that would stick open and keep the starter running. That's a hell of a sound. Had to go back to the old one. Maybe it's a short or bad wiring or just a wierd connection that's causing the solenoid to open then that motion knocks the connection loose and the solenoid closes and that motion reconnects it and then the solenoid opens again and that motion loosens it and blah blah blah... over and over and over and over... QUICKLY, of course. I should say first that I know jack **** about anything. So wait for an experienced voice.
Starters dragging. That means, its still engaged and the little washer at the end of the starter shaft is hammered out and dry and it makes a rattl'n sound as it spins. Overhaul the starter, son.
Take all the battery cables off, wire brush all the terminals and reinstall. If you have dirty corroded connections you can get arc jumping that can sound like that.
OK first of all I'm sure there is no snake...Second brand new battery, battery terminals. as far as the starter staying stuck would that cause the starter solenoid switch to rattle? This is a fender mount solenoid by the way.
My 272 some times sticks and sounds like i am trying to start a running car I havent had a rattle snake noise yet! That one confuses the **** out me ! Josh
Well since the solenoid switch on the fender gets hot and the cable going to the starter gets hot also, I'm gonna remove the starter ang get it checked out at the local auto parts store..... more later...TD
I finally figured it out !!!!! I bought a new hi-torque starter for the Edsel and in the process of installing it a noticed that the cable that runs from the starter solenoid to the starter was fried and the insulation had crumbled off ; so the cable was touching the frame. So replaced the starter and the cable and no more problem! I hope this helps someone... TD
