32 Banjo bearing race damage, is this ok?

This is what the bearing race for the wheel bearing looks like on my 32. This is the bottom so it is the load side. What are my options? Leave it, replace the bell? I don't plan on driving a million miles on it in the future but it will be driven some. Thoughts?

Thats ****ed.it will chomp a new bearing to bits in no time.

fix it right, get a hardened sleeve,( I got them from john at columbiatwospeed.com) heat the bell to remove temper from the hard surface, machine it off to a press fit tolerance for the new sleeve, press on, fit new roller bearing to hub.You need a shop with a pretty big swing lathe, and a good size press to do it. I paid about $300 to have a pair done here in Australia, might be less over there.

Vintage Ford in Sacramento Ca sells a replacement sleeve, find a good machine shop and replace them, or the bearing monster will gitcha.

The guys are right in that should be a pretty standard machine shop operation in a regular machine shop that has a lathe that will handle the bell.

  6. Any chance you could replace it cheaper than repairing it?

That's not ok. Either have it re sleeved or find a better axle housing and replace that.
Do you know for sure that you have a '32 rear end or is it a later banjo?

Late Model A & early '32 rears are basically the same, it would be easier to find a Model A axle housing if that's what you have.

What do you guys think of having a machine shop weld it up and grind it to size like they do with crankshafts? Just a thought.....

Welding would be more work and the whole thing would have to be welded, not just the bad spot, as i'm sure it is all undersize. Having it turned and sleeved is the best route, better than finding a used one as it will have wear also.

Its a 32 banjo I'm pretty sure. It has the hollow pinion. As a side note are the pinions on the 32 the same as the late model A? I have a broken tooth on my pinion as well.

I have no personal experience but from reading on the Ford barn, there are better repair sleeves than others. I'd be asking over there before buying a repair sleeve.

Model A axle housing has spring over axle 32 & later have spring behind axle, have access to a 32 rear end, will check housings and pinion, let you know!
