'65 Buick question kinda o/t

A friend of mine bought a '65 Buick Skylark, he said it had the 310 Wildcat motor. Is that a nailhead? he said that the valve covers were like that of a nailhead but I didn't think the Skylarks came with them

 

it's a 300cu engine. Buick posted their torque spec and not the size or HP. They're a good engine, smaller than a SBC and uses the front distributor and the standard BOP bell pattern. Almost the same as a 340 (340 has taller block) and the same design as the 215 aluminum engine.

 

Look at motor. Distributor in back? Nailhead. Up front? 215/300/340

The 310 Wildcat is definitely a 300. It's the 2 barrel, and there are no aftermarket intakes for 'em, so you have to find a used one. They are on ebay occasionally, but the iron 4 barrel intakes were only made in '65, so they're not too common...

 

Would a intake off a 215 work? Are the heads on the 300 of the same design of the 215?

 

No. The 215 had a combination intake gasket/valley pan to seal the lifter valley, while the 300 intake sealed the lifter valley, like a sbc intake does. I think the 300 intake is a bit wider as well.

 

I think you can use the 300 heads on a 215. I saw it in a 1968 HotRod Magazine. I'll scan and post later.

 

Yes, the '64 300 heads will work on a 215 block, but they work best on one that's had the stock sleeves bored right out of it and 3.75 inch bore sleeves installed in their place. 265 Chevy pistons can then be used, and it works out to 247 cubic inches.

 

I was thinking if dress up items, Like using 215 polished valve covers on the 300.

 

So from what I've read there is no way to get an aftermarket intake manifold for a 1965 Buick 310 wildcat? Also I read that the two door skylark is hard to find...?

The 215 valve covers do work on the 300 engine. In 64 Buick had an aluminum head with an aluminum intake option and it will interchange with the 65 Buick 300 but the ports are a little smaller on the 64 version.

Not a nailhead, Buick got an all new engine in 65.

 

My father has a 425 out of '67 wildcat convert, complete takeout carb to pan and all accessories, trans etc. located in central il, running when pulled, in garage since, If youre interested IM me and I can put you in touch with him.

He had a 65 buick skylark in 68 or so, kept it for a few years.

 

The 425 was last used in '66. 1967 was the first year for the 430 big block which evolved into the 455 in 1970. Pretty easy to tell a 425 from a 430.

You guys realize this post is from 2006......
