I have a Cherry 1965 Continental convertible with the suicide doors and want to yank the 430 MEL motor and install a 68' or later 460 385 series motor and overdrive transmission. My questions are has anyone done this or know of someone that has already done this swap that I can talk to and who in the Country to go to to get a nice rebuilt 460 and O.D. transmission from? Won't say money is not a question but do not mind paying whatever it costs to get a guarenteed engine and transmission and anything else I can buy to make the swap easier Why am I doing this?, in spite of my best efforts the engine has so many minor oil leaks it is driving me crazy, I will have to pull it again to address those (these MEL engines have a valley pan like the Pontiacs) and since it does not have hardened valve seats for unleaded fuel, makes only about 310 horse and is a heavy pig in my unibody and ****s gas want to upgrade if it comes out with that 460, I should be able to make 450HP by accident with a 460 with stock exhaust manifolds. Any and all help will be appreciated and considered. I understand Unclescooby is one of the experts over here on this and hope to hear from him and anyone else who wants to add somthing. Dave
wow you're kinda wanting high ponies from a 460 {maybe with some good work} the main things to keep in mind with 460's is oil pans & heads..after-market is gonna be your best bet for heads then your gonna have think about cams .& cars had front oil pan stumps-truck had rear stumps, good luck-------chuck
If you mean "sump" I thought the 460 was a front sump like my 430. I build engines, just not Fords. I would put a hyd. roller in it with an aftermarket intake and it should run great with the stock exhaust manifolds. If I buy the engine from a rebuilder I would ask about port work but want to keep the stock heads, this is a cruiser and not a race car. Want to run the roller cam instead of flat tappet as it will not be a break-in problem or a problem with my running synthetic oil which I prefer as this is a driver, oils are a big problem now with flat tappet cams as the Government is taking out the zinc. Please keep coming with your suggestions. Dave
Unless you plan on going with the Police Interceptor/Cobra Jet exhaust manifolds you simply will not make 450hp with a log manifold, especially with a stock cast iron head. Simply not gonna happen.
You should be able to swing 450 pretty easy. Manifolds are going to be your restriction though. You'll need work done to both the intake and exhaust side to get there with the manifolds. With a decent set of headers it would be much easier to accomplish. Check out 460Ford.com; lots of information and decent guys in general. If you're in need of parts/core or can't find someone local to build you a motor, let me know. Also, if you want more detailed info on the different parts out there, heads, blocks, etc. along with sizes and measurements - cc's, deck height, and the like - let me know and I'd be glad to help.
