so i picked up this sport coupe and after looking at it i'm thinking about turning it into a roadster, i found a couple pics on ebay of roadster coupes that look pretty good, not keen on the track nose, i know some of the guys on here have done them are there any build threads, i dont seem to be able to find them if there are, thanks
A agree, it will never look right, doors are too long and thick.....but hell its your ride and you can do whatever you want. Pete-
I went down the same road, and the more I looked at them, coupesters never quite looked right. I ended up finding a roof for mine. Good luck.
That is called a "Special" coupe not a sport coupe. The one you show had a Landau style roof to it. Not like the "sport" model.
personally i think you should keep it a coupe... you got a good head start compared to a sport coupe, and i would feel weird about cutting those doortops off.
that looks like a 28-29 cowl and doors with 30-31 sportcoupe quarters maybe, the door length looks like sportcoupe...
I agree, thats not a sport coupe, Looks more like a 5 window coupe. No expert but it looks like you could find the parts to put a roof back on the car. I kept my door frames on my sport coupe. http://i968.photobucket.com/albums/ae162/69-Z10/29 model A/IMG_1872.jpg
there is more to my story, i just sold my roadster project last week and i'm haveing withdrawal, i have a nice 31 coupe project allreadythat i have no plans on selling, i also know of a 28/29 coupe roof i think i can pickup for next to nothing, i have a 4 door that i could use the rear side windows and back window to finish this project off with a flat roof much like a T-coupe, that copper coupster looks pretty dam sweet.
A few years ago there was a light green sport coupe with wires on the cover of one of the mags. It was just beautiful with the windshield and doors chopped and intact, no roof. I loved it. I vote for keeping it a sporty and not trying to make it something it isnt. A pic of mine under construction. Not a real sporty, just a bunch of parts. Also check out HomemadeHardtop57 build thread.... http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=464364 I just love em'.
Your coupe isn't a sport coupe, it's the remains of a leatherback coupe. Same body as a steelback coupe from the beltline down. Just find the top from a steelback coupe and bolt her on. Or cut it off and forever be scoffed at by the rodders who walk by and think "poorman's roadster".
Hey, I resemble that remark! http://s968.photobucket.com/albums/ae162/69-Z10/29 model A/?action=view¤t=hotrodrear.jpg
Sounds like a lot of people think we are building turds, but I like 'em! Here are a couple pictures of mine mocked up before I tore everything apart for the frame mods. Anybody else working on one of these "coupsters"? I don't care what type of car it is.......if it rolls, it's good!
heres mine sportcoupe turned roadster, just finished waiting to put a balanced drive shaft in it ...enjoy
I'm actually building a coupster right now. I don't want to go deep into details but the basic idea for my build is to make a coupster look right. I've done a lot to it and still have a lot left to do to my coupster before the body is finished. It'll be different, that's for sure. My build thread is in the signature.
This is one of the better looking coupsters I've seen yet! If I had seen this before I went and hacked the door tops off in my youth, I would have kept them and built mine just like this.
Here's a long winded thread for you; Sports coupe to roadster build I did. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=213839&highlight=model+roadster
I've put this one up before. I wish I had bought it. Looks like a fun car and it all looks like the old days to me.
Hey Texas Speed, I love the direction you are going. I am planning a very similar build and am leaning toward the late 40's, early 50's Bonneville style car with no windshield and possibly a belly pan to get the LOW look without sacrificing ride, etc. May not be practical, especially in the NW, but who said these things are practical anyway. Mine has a 4" dropped front axle, and a 1" dropped front perch. Just finished Z'ing the frame 5-1/2" in the rear. Will use a stock "A" cross-spring set-up on a pair of '41 Ford wishbones. There are a couple of great articles in "Rod & Custom" regarding using split wishbones in the rear. I'm still sorting out the set-up so it doesn't fold up like everybody seems to think it will. I'd love to hear more about your project as you move ahead and possibly trade notes occasionally.
Thank you. We'll see how long I can go without a windshield. I've been reading up on those articles as well and am still brainstorming the rear suspension set up. It'll definitely be Z'd though. Anytime you want to know something or get an opinion, just PM me. Oh, and start a build thread on yours as well! Us coupster guys need to stick together.
here is an older pic of my sport coupe with with a top...ran it all summer ******* and this winter a friend and i will be making a folding/removable top
thanks i tryed my hardest to do it all my self and spent alot of time trying to get it the way i wanted..early to mid 40's style on the cheap maybe a kid in his shed someplace in pa.. id like to think ...
wow there are lots of great looking coupsters around, i'm really leaning toward building my body into a coupster, i'm thinking of changing my cowl to be more roadster like, use roadster posts and windshield, also moveing the back above the trunk forward, how have some of you guys finished the tops of your door off?
That's exactly what I did except I just rearranged the proportions of the stock coupe A-posts and top brace. I sectioned the top cowl brace so it doesn't have a flat surface on the front and comes to a point and will narrow the A-posts so it looks more streamlined. As for the doors, I plan on narrowing the doors so they're not so thick. The only reason why these doors are so thick is because of the window hardware on the inside but since I won't be using windows, narrowing them is a no-brainer to do. I'm also planning on capping the top of the doors, sectioning half a inch in between the body lines so they're closer together then continuing the body line around the rear of the ****pit opening. So the top side of the entire car is pretty much custom. The biggest give-away for a coupster is the length of the doors but I think I'll be fine with that since that will give me more room to get in and out of the car.
