If you are referring to the Howard Cams from the Los Angeles area, yes. I have used their products including their entire cam kit with the Mushroom Tappets and the entire cam kit. It was a great product. But that was in the 53-68 era. The engine with the cam and kit in it is still running and in my family. Normbc9
I have a vintage Howard solid roller cam in my Pontiac 195. Haven't run it much as the car isn't quite done yet.
I had one way, way back in a 327 motor. It didn't seem to perform all that great, later I found out that Howard's built mainly for the roundy track guys. Changed it out to a stock 350 hp Vette cam and the 327 cam alive. Maybe I just got the wrong grind--- cooger BTW, later I found the cam was not true, had a minute bend in it somewhere
There was a time when Howard Johansen was one of the seminal figures in the sport of drag racing. I see that now they're using a different logo and a Wisconsin address. I'm ***uming that the company was sold(?)
Howard, Iskendarien, Clay Smith and a few others were pioneers of camshaft design in the early days of drag racing. I ran one in an old 292 Y-block Ford and it was pretty good for the price, $27 if I remember but that was a weeks pay in 1961.
I ran a "Howard M8" in my flathead many moons ago, I got it from Rich Gausco as it didn't idle rough enough for him. It was great at top end speeds. I guess I ran it for about 5 years, then switched to an Isky 400 Jr. for the same reason. Jay Y.
An M-8 Howard is pretty mild. .328" lift, 258* duration, 100* lobe centers. I have one in my 291" (was a 286 until it wore out.) Merc/'32 5wdw. The cam was ground by Donnie Johansen before the company was sold.
I got a Howard's cam and retro fit roller lifters in a OT truck. It makes good power where I want it and has about 50k miles on it. I would and will buy a Howards again!
A .450-.470 lift w/ the exhaust slightly more. Duration .215-225. Will give you sound and power. As far as hands on w/ Howard's myself, no. BUT their rep. is quite good. Good luck.
has anyone had a problem with howard cams?? getting ready to order 1 from summit unless i see some negative feedback thanks
If it is a billet cam, they can be straightened very easily once you know how and have the correct fixture. There was never a billet cammed engine left our shop without the camshaft being first checked and or straightened, regardless of who's name was on the box, TR
