newbie here, just got a 54 and i want to bag it! whats the best system? and whats involve in bagging my 54. also much am i looking on cost for this project? any help guys? thanks
you know....this is a TRADITIONAL hot rod and custom site. If there wasn't any BAGGING in the 50s and early 60s, there won't be a lot of help here. Look around the site a little bit....then you'll get a handle on what works and what doesn't. There are some HAMBers with bags....and we love 'em anyway....just not a typical modification for a TRADITIONAL car.
well my TRADITIONAL car bounces the axle off the frame a lot, being when you get old you carry a lot of baggage so i have bought 2 air bag set ups for the rear and neither have a prayer of working so i have proabbly spent over $600 and dont have any progress, got the air line and controll under the floor and installed maybee having a hoist and welding a new crossmember in would help?? i dont know but want to fix this system in the next few months at least some of the leftovers fit on other cars so all is not lost but these air bag companies seem to have about 7 brackets and send something out that might fit?? but usually is not even close
Someone put up a link to Alex Gambino's 54. Alex runs a shop in So Cal and sells the parts, install, etc...
There are tons of different ways to bag a 54 if you do a search here youll find a few. I bagged my stock front end and three linked the rear. I like the three link with the bags forward of the axle it allows for less pressure at ride height for a smoother ride and also gives you more lift when the bags are maxed out.
Well, as has been discussed on here ad nauseum, bags were used in the '50's, (remember the Ala Kart?) so no worries. Gambino might be worth contacting, as mentioned...
oh yes, of course - so much was "traditional" about the Ala Kart. In spite of our love and appreciation for the wondercars of yesteryears shops, in my mind, traditional refers to what most of us were doing to our personal cars. I came from a Hot Rod town...and NOBODY was building Ala Karts....well, Roy Delaney (RIP) was pretty good, but the Ala Kart is certainly an icon...but it's not what I'd use to help someone understand 'traditional' in the vein it's used here. dj
1909, Cowey Motors made the first "air ride", "bagged", whatever you want to call it system. Bags have been and were used in the 50's and 60's in stock and non stock applications. They might not have been used a whole lot and they are defiantly more popular today but they can be and are considered "TRADITIONAL". I love how people on this site pick and choose what they feel is "TRADITIONAL".
Alex's shop is 400 miles from So Cal, in Nor Cal. You want a MII front setup, vendor of your choice, but Fatman is good, and a Gambino Kustoms Taildragger Kit. We like them so much, we use them in our shop. http://gambinocustoms.com/ Give them a call, and they will get you set up, the right way.
