Can anyone out there skool me in on the 427 W motor,specs/Hp & is it any good besides a boat anchor

  2. Are you talking about the bored/stroked 427ci Z11 409's?

  3. If you have one of them mystery motors you can sell it and get a BIG ;) boat to use that anchor on.......

  4. I thought all W engines were the 348s and 409s except for the ultra rare Z-11 427 that came in the aluminum fendered and bumpered '63 Impala drag cars.

Don't confuse that engine with the 1963 427 NASCAR mystery engines that were similar to, but not the same as the 396, 402, 427 and 454 Mark IV big blocks.

Trivia question: A Chevy set on the pole for the '63 Daytona 500. Who was it? And I'll tell ya' in advance that it wasn't Junior Johnson.

I've only seen one in my life, never even seen one in pictures or books. When I was about 6yo, and my dad used to take me street racing with him on valley pkwy and center city pkwy in escondido. My dad drove a 64 Ford custom 300 factory k code car with 390 birds on the side.thats the single four 427 and 4spd car for you non Ford guys. Had the donut cheappy 14in rims and everything, most people didn't think to look underneath and you would see the headers and the deeep 427 oil pan until it was too late. anyway, there was a guy that made his rounds around Esco. in an old, white, clapped out 4dr 57 chevy and if you were actually fortunate enough to get him to pop the hood, you would see it, a "Mystery 427" as the "W" looking valve covers stated. Some of you older north san diego guys might remember the car better than me, as that was about 20yrs ago. If I remember right the guy driving it was from Fallbrook. No information to help, but that and the time a guy lost $200 to my mom in his brand new(mid 70's)vette in that car were always my dads favorite stories about the "perfect sleeper", so I figured I'd share it with ya.

I believe it was Fireball Roberts, and allthough he died in a firey crash on the speedway, he was known as Fireball for his fastball pitching in baseball. I don't remember who won in '63, but i think it was Cale. Please refresh my memory. I love trivia.

The more i think about it, that was too early for Cale. Big 'ol TINY LUND got the win in '63, i think.

I saw a set of cast headers for that a few years ago for $1500, just to give you an idea.

  12. WRONG! Your book has bad info.

1963 Pole winner was Johnny Rutherford in a Chevrolet.

I'll bet a six pack of beer with NASCAR know-it-alls with this one and win everytime!

Here's another for ya'. In 1970, who won the 1970 Daytona 500 and both Talledega races?

This one will stump a lot of folks and also get ya' free beer!!!! Hint, he got fired by his boss at the end of the '70 season and was driving for Cotton Owens the following year.

The last time I was at Floyd Garrets(sp?) muscle car museum he had one of the 427 mystery motors on an engine stand. If you are ever near Seveireville(sp?) Tenn. (outside of Pigeon Forge) stop in it's worth it. They have a gennie swiss cheese Poncho and lots of stuff I never knew existed.

I was going to say Smokey because he had some of those engines in his garage sale several years ago. I was pretty sure no Chevy ever won any of the big races back then.

  18. I got to touch one two summers ago. First and last one I've ever seen.

It was in some dude's Early 30's Ford coupe (I want to say 33) and it was last driven in the mid 60's. The guy got it from a wrecked car or something, pulled out the 427W and put it in his car. Went racing and I guess he got scared and parked it. I saw pictures of it. Some guy in Kansas City bought it and a buddy was taking it to KC for him. He had it in the back of his truck for all the world to see and I thought it was fucking great. I was the first one to guess correctly was it was (me being a W freak)... dual quads, 2-piece intake, aluminum water pump, matching bellhousing which said something to the effect of "This bellhousing is not to be removed or separated from it's matching engine" It had on a few aftermarket pieces like an old magneto and finned aluminum valve covers, but the thing was like 99% complete and original. I think the price was like $17,000.

The 2 piece intake is a tip-off that it was a Z-11 engine.

  20. Yep... and the aluminum waterpump. Also someone mentioned that the deck height or the heads are taller than the 348 and 409's but I've never been able to tell...

  22. Now those pics want ya' to go back to the days of real drag racing.:)

4-speeds, Posi, 2x4's in real cars, with real drivers that had no rev limit chips, stutter boxes, etc..

seems i read on here that the 427 W had a bore smaller than a 409??

Z-11's... lottery dreams sent from above! anybody have an idea on how many were actually built? cars and engines both? i've read 33 or so, as well as 50.

A friend of mine used to race one in a 32 3-window in the late 60's. He launched at 6K and shifted about 8 w/5.13 gears, ran in the 10's. Not much torque with the giant ports, but lots of top end pull. Finally swapped in an L88 and picked up half a second, but just about killed the car with the torque twist.

Didn't they build a 427 version for the trucks, too? (not the high deck rat)
