Ok, I'm about to start back on my '66 F100 project. It's a blank slate. I was originally going late model fuel injection, but I'm having second thoughts. I'm leaning towards hopping up a 300 I6. A 302 is too easy. I don't want to go with an original FE 352 or up it to a 390 either. I will NOT be putting a SBC in it either. So, any other ideas? This truck will be basically stock, but airbagged and laying on the ground. Gonna run steel wheels and the original dog dish hubcaps. Haven't decided on paint color, but it'll have watson style scallops. Going with a '60s paint scheme.
It sounds to me like you already know what engine you want but are fishing to see if someone will say the same thing? Far too little info to go on. What kind of engine budget do you have. How much power do you want and what is going to be the basic use of truck when done. And why not a FE?
A 300 and AOD should do fine and be sure to get the later model (EFI) exhaust manifold so you can run true duals.
It seems to me back in '04 you already made up your mind using a Triton V-10" reintroduction I'm going to try this again, maybe I didn't get anyone too interested in me the first time. So here it is. I'm Jason Russell, from Shreveport Lowsy-ana (yes it sucks but I'm a Texan through and through so that makes me feel better). Call me Russ. I have a '66 F100. I know it's creeping on the edge of y'alls definition of classic, but I'm here anyways. The truck is in pieces again. I had to do it right this time. I'm building a new frame from scratch, going to run either a MII or Dakota suspension up front and a 4 link out back. It's all going to sit on airbags for the ultimate low-down. I'm going to get stockton wheels to build me a set of 17" steelies that I can use my stock '66 dog dishes on. The truck is getting shaved of non important things. I'm a big believer of EFI engines, I'm sure not many of y'all are, but... I'm going to run a Triton V-10 from a superduty F250. So, if anyone else is in the Shreveport area, give me a holler and we'll swap stories, work, whatever, just not wives.
Well if ur against an FE, put a 460 in that bitch. You will get better mpgs then a 390 when ur just crusing, motor mounts from a 70s ford bolts in and you could get a big body car with a 460 in it and gut it scrap everything from it and get an almost free engine. Its a very easy swap. If you want your fuel injection you can get a 460 that is FI also.
Take a look in the CL for Shreveport; there's a guy with a complete 300 with an Offy manifold and headers for like a grand if I remember right...couple that with a T5 and you'll have some power with decent mileage plus a really cool sound...pretty close to what I have in the plans for mine...
